Chapter 16: Five Years in the Pines

The truth about Vanessa’s past as a Santino plant ignited a new fire within me. This wasn’t just my fight for innocence; it was a battle for the soul of the Moretti family, for Leo’s future, and for justice against a truly malicious individual.

Nonna Rosa, now armed with both the video evidence and the damning cassette tapes, became a strategic general. We convened a quiet meeting with Detective Alvarez at a neutral, discreet location – a small, unassuming café on the edge of the Loop.

Alvarez listened to Nonna Rosa’s revelations with a stony face, occasionally jotting notes. He meticulously examined the micro-SD card and the old cassette tape player Nonna had brought.

“This is explosive, Nonna,” he said, tapping the cassette. “If we can authenticate these recordings, Vanessa Del Vecchio is looking at far more than just child abuse.”

“She’s looking at fraud, conspiracy, and possibly racketeering charges,” Nonna added, her voice firm. “Dominic will have no choice but to cut her loose. His reputation would be ruined otherwise.”

Our immediate problem was how to present this evidence to the public in a way that couldn’t be silenced or spun by Dominic’s lawyers or Vanessa’s media connections. The blackmail narrative was still dominating the news cycle.

“We need a moment, a platform where it can’t be ignored,” I said. “Where Dominic can’t control the message.”

Nonna Rosa, a mischievous glint in her eyes, had already considered this. “The Moretti Children’s Foundation Charity Gala. At the Drake Hotel. Tonight.”

Alvarez raised an eyebrow. “That’s a live-streamed event, isn’t it? Major news coverage?”

“Indeed,” Nonna confirmed with a slight smile. “Dominic and Vanessa will be there, front and center. It is their biggest public relations event of the year.”

The plan began to form, audacious and risky. We would expose Vanessa live, during the most prominent Moretti event of the year.

“I can get you access to the hotel’s AV booth,” Alvarez said, already sketching out a plan on a napkin. “With a federal warrant, citing national security concerns related to inter-syndicate activity. It’s a stretch, but given the Santino involvement, I can make a case.”

His phone buzzed. He took the call, his face becoming serious. “That was my contact. The warrant is a go. We have a window tonight. The gala starts at seven.”

My heart pounded with a mixture of terror and exhilaration. This was it. The moment of truth.

“How will I get the footage to the AV booth?” I asked, clutching the micro-SD card.

“You won’t,” Alvarez replied. “I’ll have a tech team handle the broadcast from a secure off-site location. But someone needs to be inside, to confirm the live feed is properly displayed on the main screens.”

Nonna Rosa looked at me. “You, my dear. You know the layout. You know Vanessa’s tells.”

“I can’t just walk in,” I countered. “My face is on every news channel. And I’m persona non grata with Dominic’s security.”

“You will go as catering staff,” Nonna said, her eyes gleaming. “I have connections. The catering manager, Vincenzo, owes me a favor. He will provide you with a uniform and a role. And a temporary ID.”

She turned to Alvarez. “The cassette tape. How do we introduce that?”

“That’s where I come in,” Alvarez replied. “Once the video footage airs, I’ll have an official statement prepared, mentioning new evidence related to Vanessa Del Vecchio’s past affiliations, leading to a formal investigation. The media will pick up on it immediately.”

“And the footage of Leo?” I asked, my voice catching.

“It will be handled with discretion,” Alvarez assured me. “The feed will focus on Vanessa’s actions, not exploit the child’s injury.”

The plan was set. A precise, high-stakes operation. I would infiltrate the gala, Nonna Rosa would be a prominent guest, and Alvarez would be the hidden hand. Tonight, Vanessa Del Vecchio’s carefully constructed world would come crashing down.
