The Drake Hotel buzzed with an electric hum of high society. Limousines lined Michigan Avenue, disgorging Chicago’s elite onto the red carpet. Flashes from paparazzi cameras exploded like fireflies in the dimming twilight.

I adjusted the ill-fitting catering uniform, pulling the cap lower over my forehead. The starched white fabric felt alien against my skin. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drum against my ribs. Nonna Rosa’s driver had dropped me off at the service entrance, where Vincenzo, a nervous-looking catering manager, handed me a nametag: “Maria – Dessert Service.”

“Just stick to the back,” Vincenzo whispered, his eyes wide with worry. “Don’t attract any attention. Nonna told me you’re… important.”

I nodded, clutching a tray of mini cheesecakes, the sugar doing nothing to calm my churning stomach. The grand ballroom was a dazzling spectacle. Crystal chandeliers dripped light onto polished marble floors. Tables were set with exquisite china and towering floral arrangements.

And there, on the main stage, stood Dominic Moretti and Vanessa Del Vecchio. Vanessa, radiant in a shimmering emerald gown, her arm linked possessively through Dominic’s. They looked like the perfect power couple, the picture of wealth and philanthropy. The very image she had worked so hard to cultivate.

I kept my head down, weaving through the throng of guests, my eyes darting to the giant video screen behind the stage. It currently displayed a rotating carousel of the Moretti Children’s Foundation logo and heartwarming photos of children.

The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, cigars, and money. I spotted Nonna Rosa at the head table, a dignified figure in a dark evening gown, her expression unreadable. She gave a subtle nod in my direction, so slight I almost missed it.

Dominic took the microphone, his voice resonating through the ballroom, smooth and confident.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” he began, a charming smile on his face. “Thank you for joining us tonight to support the Moretti Children’s Foundation.”

He paused, a practiced beat, then turned to Vanessa, pulling her closer. “And tonight, I want to take a special moment to acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of my fiancée, Vanessa Del Vecchio.”

A polite smattering of applause filled the room. Vanessa beamed, her eyes shining under the spotlight. She waved gracefully to the audience.

“Vanessa has brought so much joy, so much grace, and so much devotion to our family,” Dominic continued, his voice swelling with pride. “Especially to my son, little Leo. She truly embodies the spirit of compassion and family values that our foundation champions.”

He raised his hand for a toast. “To Vanessa, a true matriarch in the making, and a testament to the power of love and selfless care!”

The crowd raised their glasses. Vanessa glowed, taking a small sip of champagne, her triumphant gaze sweeping across the room.

My heart hammered. This was the peak of her carefully constructed facade. The moment she believed she had won.

I exchanged a quick, almost imperceptible glance with Nonna Rosa. She met my eyes, a silent signal passing between us.

Then, the main video screen behind Dominic and Vanessa flickered. The Moretti logo vanished.

A hush fell over the room as a grainy, timestamped image filled the screen. It was Leo’s nursery. The familiar crib, the rocking chair, and the antique wooden clock on the bedside table.

My hands trembled, nearly dropping the dessert tray. The time stamp glowed brightly: “8:47 PM.” The exact moment.

Dominic’s speech faltered. His eyes, and Vanessa’s, were now fixed on the screen, their smiles slowly fading, replaced by growing horror.

The room held its breath. The silence was absolute, broken only by the faint, muffled sounds of the live broadcast about to begin.
