Chapter 16: Five Years in the Pines

Nonna Rosa’s words about Vanessa being a “dangerous asset” from years ago stirred a new, unsettling current in the already turbulent waters. Her composure, typically unwavering, now showed a flicker of deep-seated worry.

“What do you mean, Nonna?” I asked, sensing a deeper, darker secret lurking beneath the surface.

She rose slowly, her movements deliberate, and led me to a seldom-used study in her house. The air in the room was thick with the scent of old paper and leather-bound books. On one wall, behind a large portrait of a stern-faced Moretti ancestor, was a small, almost invisible safe.

“Some things,” she said, her voice barely a whisper, “are best kept out of sight, even from family.”

She meticulously worked the combination, her fingers surprisingly nimble for her age. The heavy steel door swung open with a soft click, revealing not stacks of cash or jewels, but neatly organized files and several worn cassette tapes.

She pulled out a dusty folder, its edges yellowed with age, and a single, unmarked cassette.

“Vanessa Del Vecchio,” Nonna read from the folder, her voice hardening. “Ten years ago. Before she ever set foot in a Moretti home. Before she was even known in Chicago.”

My heart pounded. This was something bigger than personal revenge.

“Vanessa wasn’t just ‘social-climbing’ back then,” Nonna continued, her eyes fixed on the documents. “She was planted. By the Santino syndicate from Detroit.”

The name “Santino” was like a phantom chill in the Chicago underworld. A rival family, brutal and notoriously expansionist, who had often tried to encroach on Moretti territory.

“She was an informant?” I asked, incredulous.

“Worse,” Nonna corrected, her voice laced with disgust. “She was a Trojan horse. Her job was to get close to a key Moretti figure, gain trust, and then use that access to dismantle our family’s assets, specifically the real estate trust.”

She held up the cassette. “These are old recordings. From an internal investigation I commissioned back then. Whispers from our own network. I had my suspicions about her. That girl always had a hungry look in her eyes.”

Nonna explained that the Santino syndicate had been trying to get their hands on the Moretti family’s $45 million real estate trust for decades. The trust, established by Dominic’s great-grandfather, was the bedrock of the Moretti family’s legitimate businesses and offered immense leverage in the city.

“Her target was Dominic’s cousin, Marco,” Nonna explained, her gaze distant. “He was the primary trustee then, before Dominic took over. She lured him in, gathered information on the trust’s vulnerabilities.”

“But she failed,” I said, trying to piece it together.

“She was too greedy, too careless,” Nonna said, a hint of disdain in her voice. “Marco discovered her true intentions. He was furious. If I hadn’t intervened, Dominic would have had her ‘dealt with’ then and there. But I saw an opportunity.”

“What opportunity?”

“To turn her,” Nonna revealed, a cunning gleam in her eyes. “I used my leverage, told her I would expose her to both syndicates. She agreed to disappear, to leave Chicago. We paid her off, of course. A tidy sum to keep her silent and out of our lives.”

My mind reeled. Vanessa was a double-crosser, a professional manipulator, not just a socialite.

“She came back,” I realized, the pieces clicking into place. “She wormed her way back into Dominic’s life. Why?”

“To finish what she started,” Nonna stated plainly. “To get her hands on that trust. She learned from her mistakes. She waited until Dominic was vulnerable, until Leo’s mother passed. She targeted the family, knowing Dominic would be too blinded by grief and a desire for stability to see her for what she truly is.”

The cassette tape in her hand felt like a ticking bomb. This wasn’t just about child abuse anymore. This was about organized crime, betrayal, and a multi-million-dollar fortune.

“This changes everything,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Indeed,” Nonna Rosa agreed, a somber note in her voice. “This makes Vanessa a threat not just to Leo, but to the entire Moretti name. And now, dear Maya, we have not only the truth of Leo’s injury, but the truth of Vanessa’s true loyalties.”

She looked at me, a fierce determination in her eyes. “Dominic values loyalty above all else. When he sees this, he will realize he’s been played for a fool.”
