My Mob Boss Employer’s Fiancée Broke Her 14-Month-Old Step-Son’s Arm and Framed Me — But She Didn't Know About the Clock on the Mantle
The ballroom erupted into a cacophony of gasps, murmurs, and frantic whispers. The live broadcast feed had captured Vanessa’s panicked flight and Nonna Rosa’s thunderous declaration. Cameras flashed, reporters surged forward, shouting questions. Dominic stood frozen on the stage, his face a mask of public humiliation and private fury.
I didn’t wait. As Vanessa stumbled out, I dropped the dessert tray, letting the mini cheesecakes scatter across the marble floor. Ignoring the stares, I pushed through the crowd, heading directly for the service door she had just vanished through.
The air in the catering kitchen was thick with the smell of roasting meats and boiling vegetables. Chefs in tall white hats looked up, their faces a mixture of confusion and alarm as Vanessa burst through the door.
She ran a few panicked steps into the kitchen, her expensive gown snagging on a rolling cart. She spun around, her eyes wild, searching for another exit, for a hiding place.
But there was no escape.
Detective Alvarez stepped out from behind a large stainless-steel counter, blocking her path. He wasn’t alone. Eight uniformed Chicago police officers materialized from various corners of the kitchen, their presence an immediate, undeniable wall.
“Vanessa Del Vecchio,” Alvarez stated, his voice calm and professional, cutting through the clatter of the kitchen. “You are under arrest.”
Vanessa froze. Her eyes darted from Alvarez to the officers, then back to the service door, which was now filled with the flashing lights of news cameras. A throng of reporters, having followed her, spilled into the kitchen, their microphones thrust forward, capturing every second.
“For what?” she shrieked, her voice high and desperate, her face contorted in a grotesque mask of fear and fury. “This is a setup! This is that nanny’s doing!”
“Aggravated child abuse, filing false police reports, and extortion,” Alvarez rattled off the charges, his voice devoid of emotion. “We also have reason to believe you were engaged in a long-term scheme to defraud the Moretti family trust, potentially in collaboration with a rival syndicate.”
The words hit her like physical blows. Her shoulders slumped.
“You have the right to remain silent,” one of the officers began, stepping forward.
Vanessa let out a choked sob. She sagged, her expensive gown crumpled, her carefully constructed poise shattered beyond repair.
Two female officers moved in, their hands steady, and gently but firmly took Vanessa’s arms. She didn’t resist, her body limp with defeat. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the kitchen, a stark, definitive sound against the backdrop of camera flashes and shouted questions.
“No! Get off me!” she cried, a last flicker of defiance. “Dominic! Dominic will save me!”
But Dominic was nowhere to be seen. He had been abandoned, left to face his own public reckoning.
As the officers led her away, Vanessa’s eyes met mine across the chaotic kitchen. Her gaze was pure, unadulterated hatred. It promised vengeance, but it was a powerless, impotent rage.
The cameras followed her, recording her every stumbled step, her tear-streaked face, her public downfall. The story of the “violent ex-con nanny” had been obliterated, replaced by the ugly truth of the mob boss’s fiancée.
The scent of lavender from Nonna Rosa’s house, the smell of freshly baked cheesecakes, the antiseptic of the hospital, the exhaust of the logistics firm — they all faded, replaced by the harsh tang of justice, cold and metallic, hanging in the air.
