Chapter 16: Five Years in the Pines

The grainy nursery footage flickered on the massive screen, freezing the entire gala in stunned silence. Every eye in the ballroom, from the society matrons to the lurking paparazzi, was glued to the timestamped image. Dominic’s proud smile had evaporated, replaced by a rigid, disbelieving stare. Vanessa’s face went white, her emerald gown suddenly looking less triumphant and more like a shroud.

Then, the video began to play.

The silent footage showed Vanessa entering the nursery, looking over her shoulder before she ripped the power cord from the main camera. A collective gasp rippled through the room.

Her face, magnified on the screen, was contorted with a cruel sneer as she approached the crib. I saw her reach in, grab Leo’s arm with both hands, and twist. The sickening sound of the bone snapping, though muted on the broadcast, seemed to echo in the sudden, profound silence of the room. A horrified murmur rose from the crowd.

The screen clearly displayed her face, red with rage, as she yelled something at Leo, then turned to glare directly at the clock, her eyes blazing, as if she knew it was watching.

Dominic staggered back from the microphone, his face a mask of utter shock and betrayal. His eyes darted to Vanessa, then back to the screen, as if unable to reconcile the woman beside him with the monster on display.

Vanessa let out a small, strangled sound. Her eyes were wide with panic, darting from the screen to the audience, searching for an escape, for a denial.

Before she could utter a word, a clear, authoritative voice cut through the stunned silence. Nonna Rosa, frail but formidable, slowly rose from the head table. Every head turned towards her.

She held a second microphone, somehow produced by one of the catering staff (Vincenzo, I realized, looking at him now openly wiping sweat from his brow). Her voice, though amplified, was steady and unwavering.

“Dominic,” Nonna Rosa declared, her gaze fixed on her grandson, “I regret to inform you, and all present, that as of this moment, the Moretti Family Real Estate Trust, valued at forty-five million dollars, has been legally transferred from your control.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. This was an earthquake.

“Effective immediately,” she continued, her voice resonating with ancient authority, “should you continue to defend or associate with Vanessa Del Vecchio, you will be permanently disinherited from all Moretti family assets. Every cent. This trust belongs to Leo. And to the true honor of our family.”

Dominic’s face was a mixture of fury and disbelief. He had been publicly emasculated. His grandmother, the silent power behind the throne, had just ripped his legacy from under him.

Vanessa’s carefully constructed world imploded. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps. She clutched Dominic’s arm, her eyes wild.

“No!” she shrieked, her voice hoarse and raw, completely unlike her polished persona. “This is… this is a lie! It’s edited! That nanny, that *criminal*, she’s trying to frame me! She’s blackmailing us!”

Her denial was desperate, unconvincing, her voice cracking with terror. She pointed a trembling finger at the screen, then at the audience, as if they were all part of some elaborate conspiracy against her.

“I didn’t! I didn’t touch him!” she stammered, her eyes darting around the room, searching for an exit, for anyone who believed her. “This is Maya! She’s a liar!”

But no one was listening. The video, stark and undeniable, was still playing, looping the moment she twisted Leo’s arm.

With a final, terrified whimper, Vanessa spun around. Her shimmering gown caught on the edge of the stage, and she stumbled, tripping awkwardly over her own feet. She pitched forward, regaining her balance just long enough to half-stumble, half-run toward a service door at the back of the stage, her high heels clacking frantically on the polished floor. She vanished through the door, leaving behind a wake of shocked silence and the looping video.

The elegant, controlled chaos of the gala had shattered, replaced by an ugly, raw truth. And Vanessa, the aspiring queen, had exited not with grace, but with a clumsy, panicked scramble for the shadows.
