The discovery of the ghost ledger felt like a physical weight, pressing down on my chest. I couldn’t bring myself to show it to Eleanor yet, not while my father was still trying to convince her that Julian was framing him. The truth felt too big, too devastating.

The 48-hour deadline for Julian’s liquidation motion was approaching rapidly. We were scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the county court that afternoon. Arthur, still rattled by the ledger but denying its authenticity, prepared to argue against the emergency liquidation.

Just as we were about to leave, the sky outside darkened dramatically. A violent thunderstorm, a strange anomaly for late autumn in Chicago, began to rage. The wind howled, rattling the windows, and rain lashed against the glass in sheets.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from a former colleague at Kincaid Studio, still loyal to Arthur. “Marcus Croft just arrived with county deputies,” it read. “They’re trying to seize the server room and vault. At the studio now.”

My blood ran cold. Julian hadn’t waited for the court hearing. He was making a physical move.

“He’s raiding the studio,” I yelled, showing Arthur the text. “Right now. Croft is there.”

Arthur’s eyes widened in alarm. “He’s trying to get to the vault! Before the judge can rule!”

Eleanor, despite her frailty, sprang into action. “We have to go. Immediately.”

We piled into Arthur’s car, the storm making the short drive downtown treacherous. The streets were slick, lightning flashed across the dark sky, and the sound of thunder rumbled deep in the distance.

When we arrived at the studio building, the scene was chaos. Marcus Croft stood in the lobby, his face a picture of smug satisfaction, flanked by two county sheriff deputies. They had a formal writ, granting them authority to seize “digital assets and physical records.”

Arthur and Eleanor immediately confronted them.

“You can’t do this!” Arthur shouted, his voice hoarse over the roar of the wind and rain. “There’s a court hearing scheduled for this afternoon!”

“The writ is valid, Mr. Kincaid,” Croft said, a thin smile on his lips. “Issued by a magistrate. We are merely executing a pre-emptive measure to secure assets before any further…irregularities occur.”

While Arthur and Eleanor argued, trying to block the deputies from advancing, Croft, with a knowing glance at one of his men, began to subtly move toward the basement access door. I knew exactly where he was going. The vault.

He carried a heavy toolbox. My heart hammered against my ribs. He wasn’t just there to seize servers. He was there to cut his way into the master vault. To get the trust deed, the very document I was supposed to retrieve.

The deputies pushed past my father, ignoring Eleanor’s sharp protests. Croft slipped through the basement door, his figure disappearing into the dim light of the stairwell.

I knew I had to stop him. But how? My father and great-aunt were helpless against the uniformed officers.

Suddenly, a blinding flash of white light erupted directly above the building. A deafening crack of thunder followed immediately, vibrating through the very foundation of the studio. The entire building plunged into darkness as the power flickered and died.

A collective gasp went through the lobby. The emergency lights, weak and yellow, flickered on, casting long, dancing shadows.

The storm had intervened. A massive power outage. And Croft was in the basement, likely in the dark, heading for the vault. This was an unexpected twist, a force of nature throwing a wrench into Julian’s plan. But it also meant I might have a chance.
