Fury contorted Silas’s face. His eyes, usually so charismatic, now burned with a desperate rage. He had lost control of his money, his image, and now, his ability to punish.

“She won’t destroy God’s work!” he bellowed. “She’s a bitter, infertile woman, seeking vengeance!”

He gathered Elder Caleb and four armed compound security guards. These men, clad in dark, paramilitary-style uniforms, were fiercely loyal, their faces set in grim lines.

“Get her out of my valley!” Silas ordered, pointing a trembling finger toward the administrative building. “Expel her from these grounds, by force if necessary!”

They marched toward the building, their heavy boots thudding on the paved path. The entrance, usually open and welcoming, was now guarded.

I stood there with Elder Ruth, flanked by two local county sheriffs, their uniforms a stark blue against the sanctuary’s pale stone. Sheriff Miller, a man with a tired but firm demeanor, held a stack of official documents.

Silas stopped short, his eyes widening at the sight of the sheriffs. “What is the meaning of this intrusion?” he demanded, his voice ringing with false authority. “This is private property! A house of God!”

“Pastor Hallowell,” Sheriff Miller said, his voice calm but firm, “we have a federal inspection warrant and a court order. Granted by a district judge, based on a forensic audit submitted by Ms. Elena Hallowell.”

He held up the warrant, its official seal clearly visible. The paper crackled in the tense air.

Elder Caleb stepped forward, his eyes darting between me and his son-in-law. “A federal warrant? Silas, what have you done?”

“She’s lying, Caleb!” Silas hissed, pointing at me. “She manipulated old documents! She’s mentally unstable, trying to destroy everything we’ve built!”

My gaze met his, unwavering. He was losing. He knew it.

Sheriff Miller didn’t flinch. “The warrant is for immediate access to all administrative records and the central server room. Any obstruction will be met with full legal consequences.”

The security guards looked uncertainly at each other, then at Silas. Their usual bravado faltered in the face of legitimate law enforcement. Elder Caleb’s face was a mask of conflict.

Silas’s grand plan to physically expel me from the valley had collided with a wall of federal authority. He, the man who believed he was above the law, was now confronted by its stern, undeniable presence. The gates of his kingdom were no longer his to command.
