My Cult Leader Stepfather Dumped Four Yards of Concrete Over My Truck to Trap Me — Until My Daughter Pointed at His Porch
The truth hung in the dusty air of the barn, heavy and suffocating. Tobias wasn’t a villain; he was a desperate man.
“But… why the concrete?” I stammered. “Why bury the cylinders under my truck? If you were trying to save them, why cover up the evidence?”
He closed his eyes for a moment, a spasm of pain crossing his face. “This morning. Just before you arrived, I realized someone had reported my plan to the Council of Elders. They knew I was trying to get the children out. I heard whispers, saw the way they watched me.”
He opened his eyes, meeting mine with a look of profound pity. “I poured that concrete in a desperate attempt to encase the evidence. I thought if I could bury the cylinders deep enough, fast enough, they wouldn’t find them when they searched my quarters. I needed those 48 hours of retarder. I needed to dig them back up at night, after they’d gone through my belongings and found nothing.”
“Who?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Who reported you, Tobias?”
He sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of years. “She caught me. Last night. I was holding the Canadian visas, going over the names one last time. She saw them.”
My blood ran cold. “Ruth?”
Tobias nodded, his eyes glistening. “Ruth. My own granddaughter. She turned me in to the Council of Elders. To secure her own standing. She believes deeply in the old ways, in the Covenant’s path. She had been rising, Mara. Quietly, but rapidly. She’s seen as a beacon of faith among the youth. The Council intends to elevate her, to put her in charge of the youth covenant. She wanted to prove her absolute devotion.”
My daughter hadn’t pointed at the porch to help me. She had pointed to ensure the evidence was buried, sealing my stepfather’s fate, and cementing her own rise to power.
