Chapter 12: Two Weeks Later

The fluorescent lights of Wayne Albright’s county office hummed, reflecting off the polished linoleum floor. Albright, a man whose suit always seemed a size too small, sweated visibly as Harlan Reed slid a stack of legal documents across his desk.

“These are your signatures, Mr. Albright,” Harlan said, his voice quiet but firm. “On multiple property valuation forms for the Purity Covenant compound.”

Albright cleared his throat. “Standard assessments. Nothing out of the ordinary.”

“Except this,” I interjected, placing the retrieved batch tag on the corner of his desk. “Keller Aggregates, October 26, 2023. This porch foundation didn’t exist in 2012.”

Albright’s eyes darted between the batch tag and Harlan. He fidgeted with a pen.

“A state audit of all your non-resident property assessments would be… extensive,” Harlan added, leaning back in his chair. “And very public.”

Albright’s bravado crumbled. He wrung his hands. “Alright, alright! Tobias came to me. He said he needed to ‘adjust’ the property values for some internal church transactions.”

“How much?” I asked.

He looked down at his desk. “Twenty-five thousand dollars. Cash. He paid me in cash.”

My stomach tightened. “To falsify county records?”

“He called it ‘expediting the paperwork,'” Albright mumbled. “He was… liquidating compound parcel deeds. Converting them into bearer bonds, he said. Untraceable, anonymous. Made sure no one would ever know.”
