As the elders murmured in outrage at Tobias’s declaration, something unexpected happened. Tobias did not fight back. He didn’t offer a fiery sermon, didn’t rail against my presence, didn’t even meet my gaze.

Instead, he stood near the podium, his head bowed, his shoulders slumped. He looked completely drained, a man defeated not by anger, but by a profound sorrow. It was a look I’d never seen on him before.

I stepped forward, holding the open cylinder high enough for the nearby deputy elders to see. The crisp bundles of cash were unmistakable.

“Elder Garman has not simply defiled sacred ground,” I announced, my voice cutting through the hushed courtyard. “He has stolen from the Covenant. He has liquidated your communal assets, not for the glory of God, but for his own greedy escape.”

I pulled out the stack of Canadian permanent resident cards, fanning them out for all to see. “These are not for the Elders. These are for children. His plan was to line his own pockets and abandon you all, leaving even the youngest vulnerable.”

The deputy elders exchanged shocked glances. Their murmuring turned into an indignant roar. I expected Tobias to be mobbed, arrested, or at the very least, to finally unleash a torrent of righteous fury in his defense.

But he just stood there, still and silent, a shadow on the assembly.
