Chapter 13: Five Years Later

After days at the hospital, I returned to Bellevue Manor one last time. The estate, once vibrant, now felt hollow and cold, preparing for a state-ordered asset seizure.

I needed to pack some of Ethan’s remaining belongings. Small toys, a favorite blanket.

I found myself back in Eleanor’s sealed suite, the room that had held so many secrets. Police technicians had combed through it, but something gnawed at me.

I approached her antique writing desk. Its surface still bore the faint scent of the almond oil she loved.

I ran my hand along the underside of the main drawer casing. My fingers brushed against something. A tiny, almost imperceptible seam.

A hidden compartment. The police techs, focused on forensic evidence, had missed it.

My heart pounded as I pried it open. Inside, tucked away, was a small stack of stationery. And a twelve-page handwritten letter.

Dated August 11, 2018. Just two days before her death.

My hands trembled as I opened it. Eleanor’s clear, elegant script filled the pages.

“My dearest Victor,” it began. “If you are reading this, I fear it means my worst suspicions have been realized.”

She described in meticulous detail how she had caught Serena searching her private safe for trust documents. How Serena’s face had been contorted with a frantic, desperate greed.

Then came the chilling realization. “I’ve noticed a strange, metallic taste in my daily morning tea,” she had written. “It began shortly after I confronted Serena about the missing funds.”

She knew. My brilliant wife had known.

“I believe Serena is poisoning me,” Eleanor’s words pierced through me. “I am growing weaker, Victor, too weak to escape the estate. She controls my movements, my food, my doctors.”

The gaslighting. It was all there.

“She has been whispering doubts about my sanity to you, I know,” Eleanor wrote, almost apologetically. “Please, my sweet caretaker, do not believe her. My mind is still clear, even as my body fails.”

And then, the final, desperate plea: “Victor, my sweet caretaker, if you are reading this, Serena has completed her work on me. Do not trust her with Ethan. She will tear our family apart for the money. Protect our boy, no matter what it costs you.”

I collapsed to my knees on the hardwood floor, the letter clutched to my chest. Hot, racking sobs tore through me.

Eleanor. My wife. She had tried to save us. She had laid out the truth, clear as day, from beyond the grave. And I hadn’t known.
