Chapter 13: (RESOLUTION/EPILOGUE): The Light on the Rooftop

Sully O’Malley finally moved, pushing away from the makeshift table. His gaze was cold, unwavering, sweeping from Julian Kincaid, still trembling on the gravel, to Dr. Aris Finch, who seemed to shrink under the scrutiny.

“Justice in the underground is swift,” Sully announced, his voice echoing with finality. “Dr. Finch. Your $85,000 markers are hereby void. Your debt to Kincaid is erased.”

Finch’s head snapped up, a flicker of relief warring with profound fear.

“However,” Sully continued, his voice hardening, “you used my tunnels for an unsanctioned, violent assault on a pregnant woman. That is an unforgivable offense. Effective immediately, you are banished. From Boston. From New England. If you ever set foot here again, you’ll answer to me personally. Do you understand?”

Finch nodded frantically, his eyes wide, sweat beading on his forehead. “Yes, Mr. O’Malley. Completely. I’m gone.”

Sully turned to Julian. “Mr. Kincaid. Your actions were deplorable. But the historical truth has come to light. The entity that plagued you has lifted. You will, however, make amends.”

Clara stepped forward then, a folded document in her hand. “My father and I have discussed this,” she said, her voice calm and firm. “In light of the ancestral fraud, and to make amends for the harm caused, I’ve prepared a deed of gift.”

She handed it to me. My eyes scanned the text. It stated an unconditional transfer of $500,000 from the Kincaid family trust directly into an irrevocable trust for Lily and Adam’s unborn child. A staggering sum, a profound gesture of restoration.

“This is for the baby,” Clara said, her voice softening as she looked at Lily. “For the trauma, and for the rightful legacy that was denied to the Montgomery line for over a century.”

Julian, still on his knees, looked up, his face a mixture of sorrow and a fragile peace. He reached for a separate document, already signed and notarized, that Clara had brought.

“And this,” Julian whispered, his voice gaining a touch of dignity, “is a full, unencumbered deed of ownership. For 42 Beacon Street. To Adam and Lily Montgomery. Renouncing all Kincaid claims, past and present, to the property and its associated land rights. It was never truly ours.”

He looked at me, then at Lily. “The portal in the basement,” he continued, “the breach into the well. I will personally fund its permanent sealing. Reinforced concrete, granite blocks. Whatever it takes. And I will seek psychiatric care, Adam. For the delusions. For the terror. I choose reconciliation over flight.”

I looked at the documents, then at Lily, her hand pressed to her belly. The weight of the past, the greed, the fear, the supernatural torment—it was all dissolving. The criminal syndicate, the estranged daughter, the broken old man—each playing a part in this extraordinary resolution.

Sully O’Malley gave a curt nod. “Justice served. The underground is clean. Your family, Montgomery, is clear. And Kincaid, you begin anew.”

The air in the tunnel, no longer charged with dread or a supernatural chill, felt simply like air. The covenant was restored. Not through vengeance or destruction, but through truth, repentance, and a profound act of restorative justice.

Adam returned home three hours early from his business trip to surprise his pregnant wife, Lily.
