Chapter 21: The Path Forward

I called Elena Rojas from a quiet alcove on a different floor of the hospital. My voice was tight, urgent.

“Elena,” I whispered, “I have something you need to hear. And see.”

We met discreetly an hour later at a small, out-of-the-way cafe near the hospital. I played Maria’s recovered voicemail from Victor’s phone, then handed Elena the DNA results.

She listened intently, her sharp eyes scanning the documents. Her expression, usually composed, hardened with each word.

When the voicemail ended, she let out a slow, controlled breath. “Chilling,” she murmured. “Absolutely chilling.”

She looked at the DNA report, then back at me. “So, Dante Moretti is the biological father. And Maria wants him… silenced.”

I nodded, my stomach still churning from the implications. “She’s already isolating me. Victor is terrified of her. And now this. I don’t know what she’s capable of.”

Elena leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful expression on her face. “Her capabilities are extensive, Sophia. That family operates with impunity.”

She paused, then lowered her voice. “My own investigation into the Moretti family’s obscure financial dealings has led me down some rabbit holes you wouldn’t believe.”

She pushed a small folder across the table toward me. “I found something, something related to Lily.”

My heart pounded. I opened the folder, my eyes immediately drawn to a copy of an old, sealed court record.

It was an adoption record, dated almost five years ago, for “Lily Rossi.” But it was marked “never fully processed.”

And beneath the section for “biological father,” there was a redacted “donor” father, identified only by a mysterious family alias. The name was blacked out, but the implication was clear.

“A donor father?” I breathed, my voice barely audible.

Elena nodded. “Yes. And this record was requested by a prominent legal firm, Rossi & Associates. They’re historically tied to the Moretti crime organization.”

My blood ran cold. Rossi & Associates. That was the firm Victor sometimes consulted with for “family matters.”

“So Maria orchestrated this adoption record,” I said, the realization hitting me with sickening clarity. “To erase Dante’s name. To make Lily disappear from the official records as his child.”

“Exactly,” Elena confirmed, her gaze unwavering. “It confirms Maria’s extensive, meticulous cover-up. She didn’t just hide the truth; she tried to legally scrub it out of existence.”

The sheer audacity, the cold calculation of it, was a profound act of personal cruelty. To try and erase a child’s identity, to deny her lineage, was a monstrous act of control.

It meant Maria had planned this from the very beginning, years ago. This wasn’t a sudden reaction; it was a deeply laid scheme.

“And a ‘family alias’ for Dante,” I mused, still staring at the redacted line. “They have their own secret language, their own codes.”

“They do,” Elena agreed. “And that’s why this is so difficult to trace. They operate in the shadows, even when it comes to their own children.”

She closed the folder. “This record, combined with the DNA and the voicemail, paints a very clear picture, Sophia. You’re up against an extremely powerful, ruthless opponent.”

I nodded, my mind racing, trying to process the full weight of her words. The cold, hard evidence was stacking up against Maria.

But Maria also had a vast, unseen network of influence. It was a terrifying thought.

“What now?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Elena looked at me, her expression serious. “Now, we need to decide your next move. Because once you reveal this, there’s no going back.”

Her words hung in the air, a chilling reminder of the irreversible path I was on. But for Lily, I knew there was no other choice.
