You don't belong on these grounds, Emma, my brother Julian said, stepping into the warm glow of the country club entryway and motioning for security to block me. "A disgraced felon ruins the fami...
The generator roared to full power, shaking the very foundations of Birchwood Pines. In the grand hall, the massive presentation screens, now active under emergency power, shimmered with a pale, expectant light. The collective panic of the guests had subsided into a stunned, horrified silence as they watched the screens.
Because the county clerk, following the strict protocols of urgent legal matters, had registered my probate filing as an “urgent compliance order” against the club’s corporate entity, the automated system recognized it as high-priority.
Upon server reboot, under the emergency generator power, the club’s automated legal compliance software immediately processed the incoming state data packet.
A bright, high-resolution scan of the certified DNA report materialized on the central screen, sharp and undeniable, for all 200 guests to see.
It was the same multi-page document Director Danforth had just read, but magnified, stark white text on a black background, easily legible from every table.
A robotic, synthesized voice, amplified through the club’s PA system, broke the silence. It was the automated summary function, a dry, official tone that now narrated the club’s compliance data.
“State of Connecticut,” the voice announced, devoid of emotion. “Bureau of Genetic Forensics. Case number two zero double-X dash zero four three two. Summary of findings.”
The guests, their faces illuminated by the projected light, turned their heads from the screen to each other, confusion warring with a dawning comprehension.
“Finding one,” the automated voice continued, as the text highlighted on screen. “Touch-DNA from vehicle airbag matches Julian Hollingsworth.”
A wave of murmurs rippled through the room. Heads turned towards Julian, who was still standing in the doorway of Danforth’s office, caught in the projector’s glare. His face was a ghastly white, his body frozen.
“Finding two,” the voice announced, and the screen shifted to a different section of the report. “Paternal lineage comparison. Julian Hollingsworth shares zero biological DNA with Arthur Hollingsworth.”
The murmurs died. The room fell into an absolute, deathly silence. Every eye in the grand hall snapped to Arthur Hollingsworth, who stood near the main table.
Arthur stared up at the screen, his mouth slightly agape, his entire body rigid. The display, unforgivingly clear, showed his name, then Julian’s, then the cold, scientific term: “Non-Paternity Confirmed.”
“Finding three,” the automated voice concluded, as the screen zoomed in on the final, damning detail. “Paternal markers match Leland Croft.”
The projector light cast Julian in an ethereal glow, pinning him to the spot. Leland Croft, still huddled on the office floor, whimpered. The truth, stripped bare by the dispassionate machinery of the club’s emergency system, hung heavy in the air. Julian stood frozen, caught in the harsh glare, his life, his identity, utterly exposed.
