You don't belong on these grounds, Emma, my brother Julian said, stepping into the warm glow of the country club entryway and motioning for security to block me. "A disgraced felon ruins the fami...
Julian stared at Leland Croft, then at Arthur, then back at Croft, a guttural sound escaping his throat. It wasn’t just the crash; it was everything. The entire foundation of his life, his identity, had shattered in an instant.
Arthur stood frozen, his face a mask of utter devastation. He didn’t look at Julian, nor at Croft; his gaze was fixed on some invisible point beyond the polished desk. His entire world, his legacy, had just imploded.
Outside the office window, the world began to transform. The gentle, sleeting rain intensified, morphing into a severe freezing ice storm. Ice began to coat everything: the branches of the ancient oak trees, the wrought-iron railings, the parked cars in the lot.
A low, guttural groan filled the air as a massive tree branch, heavy with ice, snapped and crashed onto the parking lot with a sickening crunch. The glass of the window rattled violently as high winds slammed against the building.
Julian, jolted by the sound, seemed to snap out of his stupor. Overhearing the results from the doorway, realizing the digital evidence was now irrefutable, his eyes fell on the physical report in Danforth’s trembling hands.
It was a copy, yes, but in his panic, it represented the immediate, tangible threat.
With a wild, desperate cry, Julian lunged across the office. His target: the multi-page DNA report Danforth still held.
“No!” Julian screamed, his voice raw with disbelief and rage. “This isn’t real! You fabricated it!”
He snatched the papers from Danforth’s grasp, the director letting out a yelp of surprise. Julian spun towards the roaring office fireplace, his intention clear. He would destroy the evidence.
He crumpled the pages in his shaking hands, already moving to toss them into the hungry flames that danced behind the protective screen. The heat from the fire washed over his frantic face.
Deputy Albright, reacting instantly, moved to intercept him, but Julian was fast, fueled by a primal need to obliterate the truth.
I watched him, my own hands hanging loosely at my sides. A strange calm settled over me, even as the wind howled outside and Julian raged.
I knew the physical paper was merely a copy. The true, official record, the one that had just dismantled everything, sat secure on the state server. Julian’s desperate act was futile. The truth, once released, could not be burned away.
