You don't belong on these grounds, Emma, my brother Julian said, stepping into the warm glow of the country club entryway and motioning for security to block me. "A disgraced felon ruins the fami...
The automated voice finished its summary, and the screens continued to display the damning DNA results, highlighting key phrases: “Non-Paternity Confirmed,” “Julian Hollingsworth: Driver,” “Leland Croft: Paternal Match.” The drone of the generator, the only other sound, amplified the shock in the grand hall.
Then, with a sudden flicker, the main lights in the side corridors returned. The emergency power system had stabilized, bringing partial illumination.
Deputy Albright, who had been standing guard in the office doorway, moved with swift, decisive action. He reached down and pulled Leland Croft to his feet.
“Leland Croft,” Deputy Albright stated, his voice ringing with official authority, “you are under arrest for document falsification, bribery, and obstruction of justice.”
Croft let out a choked cry as Albright snapped handcuffs around his wrists. The silver glinted in the returning light.
Then, Albright turned to Julian, who still stood paralyzed under the relentless projector beam.
“Julian Hollingsworth,” Deputy Albright continued, his voice firm. “You are being taken into custody for obstruction of justice, insurance fraud stemming from the past vehicle crash, and criminal conspiracy to falsify official records.”
Julian flinched as the handcuffs clicked into place on his wrists. The weight of his own lies, now publicly exposed, seemed to buckle his knees. He looked around wildly, his eyes settling on Arthur, then me, then the horrified faces of the assembled guests.
Arthur, finally tearing his gaze from the screens, took a hesitant step towards me. His face was pale, ravaged, etched with a raw humiliation I had never seen on him before. His expensive suit, his perfect coiffure, suddenly seemed to sag.
“Emma,” he said, his voice strained, almost unrecognizable. He extended a trembling hand. “I… I am so profoundly sorry. There must be… there must be a way to fix this.”
His eyes darted to Julian, being led away by Deputy Albright, then back to me, desperation clouding them.
“Your place in the family,” he stammered, his words fumbling. “Your trust fund. We can discuss it. My limousine is outside. We can… restore everything.”
He seemed to shrink before my eyes, his vanity and social prestige utterly shattered. His offer wasn’t for me, not truly. It was for himself, a desperate attempt to salvage his ruined standing in front of his peers.
I looked at him, his hand still suspended in the air. The man who had dismissed me as disposable, who had actively conspired in my betrayal, now sought reconciliation.
“There’s nothing left to restore, Arthur,” I said, my voice quiet but firm.
My gaze met his for a long moment. I felt no triumph, no surge of vindication, only a quiet, resolute calm.
I turned away from him. A club security guard, now moving with renewed purpose, unlocked one of the emergency side exits. The icy wind immediately swirled into the corridor.
I walked past Arthur, past the stunned silence of the grand hall, and stepped into the cold night.
