Chapter 13: On the Following Sunday (Resolution / Epilogue)

The clinking of Leland Croft’s glass stopped abruptly as he set it down with a thud. He stood frozen, his eyes wide with a dawning terror, locked onto the green receipt in Director Danforth’s hand. Julian, on the other hand, was red-faced, his fists clenched at his sides.

Desperate, Julian’s gaze swept the bustling foyer, seeking any escape or distraction. His eyes landed on Deputy Sheriff Marcus Albright, a man in a crisp uniform providing paid security for the gala, standing near the main doors.

Julian moved with swift, agitated strides. “Deputy Albright! An emergency! I need your assistance immediately!”

Deputy Albright, a man with a pragmatic demeanor and an air of quiet authority, straightened up. He recognized Julian Hollingsworth as a prominent member of the club, a name with local influence.

“Mr. Hollingsworth,” Albright acknowledged, inclining his head. “What seems to be the trouble?”

Julian pointed a furious finger at me. “That woman, Emma Hollingsworth! She’s just stolen a diamond-encrusted watch from my father’s coat pocket!”

My jaw tightened. The lie was so blatant, so ridiculous, yet crafted to hit my most vulnerable spot: my probation record.

“Furthermore,” Julian pressed on, his voice rising slightly, “she is violating her probation by trespassing on these grounds. She was explicitly told to leave.”

Deputy Albright’s gaze shifted to me, a neutral, professional assessment. He saw a young woman in an ill-fitting coat, standing amidst a tense standoff with the club’s director and a panicked notary. He also saw Julian Hollingsworth, a pillar of the community, making a direct accusation.

“Ma’am,” Deputy Albright said, approaching me with measured steps. His voice was calm, but his presence was firm. “Mr. Hollingsworth alleges theft and a probation violation. I’m going to need you to turn over your purse for inspection.”

I knew exactly what my purse contained: my identification, a few dollars, and a sealed, official envelope. No diamond watches. No stolen property.

I met Deputy Albright’s gaze steadily. I understood his position; he was doing his job, responding to a serious accusation from a respected citizen.

“Of course, Deputy,” I said, my voice betraying no hint of fear. I knew my rights, and I knew what was in my bag.

I unslung the simple, canvas tote bag from my shoulder. My hands moved without hesitation as I unzipped it and handed it to him.

Deputy Albright took the bag carefully. He reached inside, his fingers methodically searching through its contents. First, he pulled out my wallet, examining my driver’s license and probation card. Then, a small, worn paperback book.

His fingers brushed against a thick, official-looking envelope. It was white, with bold red letters reading “STATE OF CONNECTICUT – FORENSIC EVIDENCE – CHAIN OF CUSTODY.”

He pulled it out, his expression shifting from neutral professionalism to a flicker of surprise. He looked at the sealed envelope, then at me.

Julian, watching closely, let out a triumphant scoff. “Aha! See? She’s hiding something!”

Deputy Albright ignored Julian. He held up the envelope. The weight of it, the formal markings, spoke volumes. It was not stolen property. It was the original state-issued chain-of-custody envelope for the forensic DNA kits. And its presence in my purse told a very different story than Julian’s fabrication.
