Chapter 11: The Falling Dominoes

#content-1

The news of the bakery’s transfer spread through Pine Bluff like wildfire. Marcus DuBose received the formal notice from the county registrar’s office: the Linwood land parcel, the very one his wedding venue and expansion plans hinged upon, had been transferred to a non-profit trust.

His face turned a dangerous shade of red. This rendered his legal claims moot, his development permits suddenly invalid. The cornerstone of his entire project, the “luxury country club,” was built on land he no longer had any legitimate claim to. Without that, his entire investment structure crumbled.

“This can’t be happening!” he roared into his phone, slamming his fist on his desk. “She can’t just give away her property!”

But she had. And the Pine Bluff Community Land Trust was far more resilient and legally protected than Maya Linwood, the quiet baker, ever could be. They had been fighting developers like him for decades.

Desperate to salvage his position, Marcus immediately tried to secure emergency bank credit. He needed to show his investors, especially Alderman Kensington, that he still had access to capital, that the project wasn’t dead. He dialed his primary lender, a regional bank he often used for quick turnarounds.

He was put on hold for an agonizing minute. Just as the bank representative answered, a different kind of call came through on his private line.

It was Andre Linwood.

“Marcus,” Andre said, his voice calm, cutting through the chaos. “I just wanted to let you know that a rather… detailed document has been delivered to your primary lender’s regional risk board.”

Marcus froze. He knew what Andre meant. He knew about Julian Pryce.

“That confession,” Andre continued, “it lays out everything. The falsified appraisals, the municipal fund transfers, the fabricated loan defaults against my sister. Every single detail.”

A cold dread gripped Marcus. The banks would see that. The regional risk board. They would see not just an investment gone sour, but systemic fraud, money laundering, and a tangled web of illicit dealings. His carefully constructed empire was not just facing a setback; it was facing a complete, irreversible collapse.

He hung up on Andre, his hand shaking. He dropped the phone and stared at the receiver, then at his own trembling hands. He had always believed he was untouchable, that his money and influence would shield him. But a quiet baker and her determined brother had found the exact pressure points, the vulnerabilities he thought were buried deep. The dominoes were falling, and he could feel the ground beneath him beginning to tremble.
