Chapter 16: Cold Echoes

The Grand Monarch Hall gleamed under a crisp Chicago night sky. Limousines idled, disgorging guests draped in furs and sequins. The Chicago Architectural Society Gala was the highlight of the year, a celebration of industry titans. Julian’s moment of triumph.

Security was tight. A uniformed guard, stern-faced, stood at the entrance, checking invitations. Julian had ensured I was blacklisted. My name was not on any guest list.

I approached the entrance, my heavy winter coat concealing my elegant black evening dress. The guard stepped forward, blocking my path.

“Invitation, ma’am?” he asked, his hand raised.

“I seem to have misplaced it,” I said, my voice filled with a carefully practiced air of distraction. “It must have slipped out of my bag in the taxi. I’m Audrey Higgins, one of the original founders of Higgins & Karr. I’m expected.”

He scanned his clipboard, his brow furrowing. “I don’t see your name on the list, Ms. Higgins. In fact, there’s a specific instruction to deny you entry.”

Just as he spoke, a sudden gust of wind whipped through the entrance, carrying a shower of decorative snow from a nearby display. It caught him off guard, making him squint and momentarily step back.

“Good heavens!” I exclaimed, feigning surprise. In that instant, I slipped past him, a blur of motion. I ducked behind a velvet rope, disappearing into the bustling crowd of early arrivals.

Inside, the hall was a symphony of crystal chandeliers and hushed conversations. Waiters, trays laden with champagne flutes, weaved through the throngs. My heart hammered, a mix of adrenaline and quiet determination.

I made my way to the VIP banquet suite. Julian’s award presentation binders, bound in sleek black leather, were stacked neatly on a table near the podium. This was where the night’s agenda, the award recipient’s biography, and his keynote speech notes were kept.

I watched, unseen, as a harried event coordinator briefly stepped away from the table to direct a floral arrangement. This was my window.

My hands, usually precise, moved with practiced urgency. I replaced Julian’s carefully curated promotional materials with the sealed packets I carried. Each packet contained multiple high-resolution copies: Frank Kowalski’s handwritten confession letters, the falsified municipal ledger entries, and the offshore wire transfer receipts for Arthur Croft.

I slid the packets into each binder, ensuring they were nestled directly behind the title page, impossible to miss. They were sealed in clear plastic, protecting them from spills and ensuring maximum visibility. The top one was marked, in bold red ink: “FOR IMMEDIATE REVIEW: EXECUTIVE BOARD.”

I added a smaller, separate envelope, addressed simply “SAL MORANTE – TABLE 4” to the stack. This one contained the most damning evidence of all: the detailed accounting of Julian’s $1.8 million embezzlement from the Morante syndicate’s investment funds.

The event coordinator returned, none the wiser. I moved away, blending into the periphery, watching. Julian was probably already here, mingling, basking in the glow of his impending victory. He had no idea the foundation of his empire was about to crack.

The stage was set. The blueprint of his betrayal was now hidden within the very celebration of his presumed success.
