Chapter 19: The Cinderblock Cell

The weight of David’s accusation, the planted evidence, and the stunned faces of the council pressed down on me like a physical force. Elder Finch, his face a hard mask, convened an immediate emergency council meeting.

I stood before them, my mind racing, trying to find a way to discredit David’s elaborate lie. But every word I spoke, every denial, only served to reinforce David’s narrative of a spiraling mental decline.

“She denies the obvious,” Elder Finch said, his voice heavy with disappointment. “A clear sign of spiritual delusion compounding her affliction.”

David, standing beside me, draped an arm around my shoulders, a grotesque show of concern. “My heart aches for my wife. But the Covenant’s safety, the sanctity of our medical supplies, must come first.”

The council deliberated for only minutes. The outcome was chillingly swift.

“Sister Miriam,” Elder Finch announced, his voice echoing in the hushed room, “the council decrees that you must be placed under immediate house arrest.”

My breath caught. “House arrest?”

“In the basement infirmary,” he continued, his gaze unwavering. “For your own safety, and for the purity of the Covenant. A specialized religious care team will arrive within two days to administer intensive spiritual purification.”

My mind raced. “Spiritual purification” meant forced sedation. Chemical coercion. It meant David would have complete control.

David stepped forward, holding a syringe. Its needle gleamed under the fluorescent lights. “I will prepare a high-dose sedative injection now, Elder Finch. It will keep her peaceful during transport.”

He smiled, a chilling, triumphant glint in his eyes. “For her own good, of course.”

As guards approached, I knew I had one chance. The basement infirmary. It was an old, rarely used section, filled with forgotten supplies.

I broke free from the guards’ grasp with a desperate surge of adrenaline. I darted past David, ignoring his shout of surprise, and sprinted towards the infirmary entrance.

“Stop her!” David roared.

I slammed through the door, my eyes scanning the dim room. A small, rusted storage closet, filled with empty linen bins, stood against the far wall.

I threw myself inside, pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind me. The bolt, old and stiff, scraped as I slid it home.

Seconds later, I heard the heavy thud of guards reaching the infirmary door. David’s voice, strained with fury, commanded them.

Then, a sickening click. The main infirmary door bolt slid shut from the outside. I was trapped. Alone. David had achieved his isolation. The sedative, the ‘purification,’ awaited me.
