My Cult-Leader Husband Stole My Credentials And Claimed I Was Hysterical Until An Old Letter Exposed What He Did To His First Assistant
The rising sun cast long shadows across the cobblestone courtyard, illuminating the tense standoff. David, his face flushed with fury, stood before me, the brass keycard still clutched in his hand. The gathered community members watched in horrified silence.
“Get out of my way, Miriam!” he snarled, pushing at me. “You will not destroy everything I’ve built!”
“You built it on lies, David!” I retorted, my voice shaking but resolute. “On poison and murder!”
His hand went back as if to strike me, but then he froze.
A low rumble, growing steadily louder, vibrated through the ground.
From beyond the ornate wooden perimeter barrier, four dark federal SUVs shattered the tranquility, grinding to a halt in front of the main chapel gates. Their sirens, previously silent, now wailed, a piercing cry that echoed off the sacred walls.
The heavy wooden barrier, a symbol of New Eden’s isolation, groaned and splintered as the lead SUV nudged it aside with an almost casual force.
My breath hitched. They were here.
The doors of the SUVs opened simultaneously. Special Agent Teresa Albright emerged from the lead vehicle, her face stern, her posture unyielding. She wore a dark federal jacket, her badge gleaming. Ten armed federal marshals fanned out behind her, their presence a stark, uncompromising force.
“All compound members remain standing in place!” Agent Albright’s voice, amplified by a bullhorn, cut through the stunned silence. “This is a federal operation. Any resistance will be met with force.”
A collective gasp went through the community. Faces blanched. Elder Finch, who had moved closer to David, stared at the armed agents in utter disbelief.
David, ever the manipulator, quickly composed himself. The rage vanished, replaced by a smooth, unctuous charm. He adjusted his suit, a serene smile spreading across his lips.
He stepped forward, away from me, towards Agent Albright, extending a hand in a gesture of welcome.
“Special Agent, I presume,” David said, his voice calm, confident. “Dr. David Carver, Senior Medical Elder of New Eden. I assume there has been a tragic misunderstanding. Please, allow me to offer my full assistance as sanctuary director to clear this unfortunate matter.”
He gestured around the courtyard, a picture of benevolent authority. He was already weaving his narrative, trying to control the situation, to portray himself as the victim of some external persecution. But the cold, hard glint in Agent Albright’s eyes told me his practiced performance wouldn’t work this time.
