My Cult-Leader Husband Stole My Credentials And Claimed I Was Hysterical Until An Old Letter Exposed What He Did To His First Assistant
The sight of Marcus bleeding on the floor, David standing over him with the iron rod, sent a fresh wave of horror through me. He was beyond reason.
David ignored Marcus, his eyes now fixed on the furnace, still jammed shut. He let out a frustrated growl. His plan was ruined.
He retrieved his spare brass keycard from his pocket, the very keycard Clara had used, the symbol of his absolute authority. He raced out of the furnace room, his footsteps echoing down the corridor.
I knew where he was going. The external water sampling pumps. He was going to destroy the last physical evidence of the poisoned spring before the authorities arrived.
I burst out of the infirmary, my heart pounding, following David’s fleeing figure. My bare feet slapped against the cold stone floors.
He tore through the main chapel, past the rows of empty pews, towards the great oaken doors.
I intercepted him in the main cobblestone chapel courtyard, just as he reached the gates. The first hint of dawn light was painting the sky, but the courtyard was already filling with a stunned crowd of early risers, drawn by the alarms and the shouting.
“David! Stop!” I cried, my voice raw.
He spun around, his eyes wild, his face contorted in a mask of pure venom. He saw me, then he saw the gathering community.
“Miriam!” he shrieked, his voice cracking, tearing through the quiet morning. “She’s possessed! Psychotic delusions! She’s been poisoning herself, poisoning the wells of our community with her twisted thoughts!”
His arm swept out, encompassing the entire crowd. “She is a danger to the Covenant! A danger to us all! The devil has taken root in her mind!”
The community members murmured, their faces a mixture of fear, confusion, and horror. They looked from David, their respected Elder, to me, his seemingly unhinged wife. The gaslighting, the planted evidence, the whispers of dementia—it had all worked. They believed him.
David lunged, trying to bypass me and reach the gates. I stood my ground, my arms outstretched. The brass keycard gleamed in his hand, a symbol of the dark power I was determined to break. The full weight of his lies, his murders, and his manipulations hung in the air.
