David’s smooth words hung in the air, a desperate attempt to assert control over a situation rapidly spiraling beyond his grasp. Agent Albright did not take his outstretched hand. Her gaze was fixed, unblinking.

“Dr. Carver,” she said, her voice flat, “I’m afraid there’s no misunderstanding.”

Just then, a figure staggered into the courtyard. Marcus Bell. His uniform was torn, his face streaked with dirt, and a crimson stain marred his temple. He moved with a visible effort, his eyes fixed on Agent Albright.

David’s facade cracked. His eyes widened, a flicker of raw panic crossing his face.

Marcus, ignoring David’s furious stare, pushed past a marshal. He held out his hand, clutching a blood-stained, yellowed envelope.

“Agent Albright,” he rasped, his voice raw. “This is it. The original. From Lucas Monroe.”

Albright’s eyes locked onto the envelope. She took it carefully, her fingers brushing over the dried bloodstains. Her gaze flicked to David, then back to the letter. She had her physical proof.

Then, I stepped forward. My heart pounded, but my voice was steady. “And I have this.”

I held out a small, meticulously handwritten report. “My forensic chemical analysis. Antimony in my blood, Agent. Deliberately administered by David Carver. And heavy metals. Lead, cadmium, mercury. In the community’s sacred spring water. Lucas Monroe was right.”

A collective murmur swept through the assembled community. Their eyes darted from me to David, the weight of the truth beginning to settle. David’s face was ashen, stripped bare of all pretense.

“Dr. David Carver,” Agent Albright announced, her voice ringing with authority. “You are under federal arrest for murder, depraved-indifference homicide, federal water contamination cover-up, and evidence destruction.”

Two federal marshals moved swiftly, seizing David’s arms. He opened his mouth, a desperate, protesting cry forming.

But I wasn’t finished. I looked directly at Agent Albright, my voice clear and unwavering. This was the hardest part, the sacrifice I knew I had to make.

“Agent Albright,” I said, my gaze firm. “Four years ago, David directed me to sign off on false pharmacy ledgers. To cover up missing reagents, chemicals he was using for his ‘treatments.’ I complied. I signed them.”

A stunned silence fell over the courtyard. David, already struggling against the marshals, froze. Elder Finch gasped.

“I am an accessory,” I continued, meeting Albright’s gaze. “I take full responsibility for my actions. If David Carver is to face justice, then I must too.”

Agent Albright stared at me, her expression unreadable for a moment. Her jaw tightened. She nodded to another marshal.

“Miriam Carver,” she said, her voice devoid of emotion, “you are also under federal arrest as an accessory to fraud and obstruction of justice.”

Federal handcuffs were snapped onto my wrists, cold and unyielding. David, watching from across the courtyard as he was also cuffed, let out a guttural scream of pure, unadulterated fury. His eyes, burning with hatred, met mine. My sacrifice was complete. He could not claim sole institutional scapegoating. We would fall together.
