My Father-In-Law Called Me an Unworthy Outsider at the Police Range—Until a Rookie Saw the Scar on My Hand and Read My Military ID
Two days after the scene at the range, the air in my small rental apartment felt a little lighter. The storm had broken, and a fragile peace had settled. The phone had rung constantly, mostly from Elena, but I hadn’t answered many calls. I needed space.
Then, Elena showed up at my door. She looked tired, but resolute. She carried a small casserole dish, still warm.
“Hey,” she said, her voice soft. “Thought you might be hungry.”
I let her in. My apartment, sparsely furnished and still filled with half-packed boxes from Sofia’s belongings, felt quiet, almost empty.
She set the dish on my small kitchen table. “Chicken and rice. Sofia’s recipe.”
I gave her a small, grateful smile. The familiar scent filled the air, a comforting echo of better times.
“How are things?” I asked, knowing exactly what “things” referred to.
Elena sighed, running a hand through her hair. “Rough. Dad… he’s been calling everyone. Trying to do damage control.”
She shook her head. “But it’s too late. Hank Gallagher didn’t let it go. He sent an official report to the county police board about the missing evidence and the attempted obstruction.”
My eyebrows rose. Hank was true to his word.
“The board held an emergency meeting yesterday,” Elena continued, her voice heavy. “They asked for his resignation from his advisory position. Effective immediately.”
I felt no triumph, only a quiet acknowledgment. Arthur had clung to that position for years, using it to maintain his influence. Now, it was gone.
“He’s completely isolated,” Elena confirmed, her eyes meeting mine. “None of his old peers are taking his calls. Officer Briggs and Leo Ramos… they’ve been spreading the word. The whole precinct knows everything now.”
She looked down at her hands. “He tried to claim it was all a big misunderstanding, that you were just trying to stir up trouble.” She gave a bitter laugh. “But with Sofia’s letter and Hank’s report, there was no denying it.”
The news brought a strange mix of relief and melancholy. Arthur had faced consequences, not criminal charges, but a profound loss of the only currency he truly valued: his reputation and social standing. He was finally stripped of his ability to cause further harm.
Elena looked up. “Mateo… he asked me to tell you that he won’t contest anything. The estate, the bank accounts… it’s all yours. Just as Sofia wanted.”
I nodded slowly, the weight of the past few days settling over me. The clear skies over Lane 4 felt good, but the landscape around it was still scarred.
