Chapter 15: Three Days Later

Arthur Pendelton struggled under Hank Gallagher’s hand, trying to shake him off, but Hank’s grip was firm. The silence that followed Gary’s revelation was deafening, punctuated only by Arthur’s ragged breathing.

“Sergeant Major,” Arthur finally choked out, his voice hoarse, “this is outrageous. Lies! All of it!”

Hank released his shoulder, stepping back but keeping his gaze locked on Arthur. “Lies, Captain? We’ll see about that.”

He pulled out his phone again, tapping the screen with an intensity that promised immediate action. He wasn’t just checking military records anymore.

“If you’ll excuse me,” Hank said, his eyes still fixed on Arthur, “I think I’ll just check a little something else. A professional courtesy, you might say, between retired officers.”

He typed in a few more commands. The tension in the room ratcheted up another notch. The younger officers, including Tyler Briggs and Leo Ramos, watched with bated breath, their faces grim. They understood the gravity of what was happening.

Minutes stretched into an eternity. Hank’s eyes scanned the screen, then he looked up, a grim satisfaction settling on his face.

“Interesting,” Hank said, his voice flat. He looked directly at Arthur, whose face was now a pale mask of dread.

“Arthur Pendelton, retired Captain, Badge Number 742,” Hank read aloud from his phone. “Records show you officially retired from the force five years ago. Correct?”

Arthur nodded, swallowing hard. “Yes. After a long and distinguished career.”

Hank’s mouth twitched. “Distinguished? Your internal department notes here say otherwise, Captain.”

He looked around at the assembled officers. “It says here, Arthur Pendelton’s early retirement was… precipitated by an internal review.”

He paused, letting the words hang in the air. Arthur’s face went even paler.

“Regarding,” Hank continued, his voice devoid of emotion, “a ‘discrepancy’ in the evidence locker. Specifically, missing items from a high-profile narcotics case.”

A collective gasp went through the small crowd of officers. Tyler Briggs’ jaw dropped. Leo Ramos stared, his eyes wide with shock.

“The review concluded,” Hank read, his voice deliberate, “that you retired suddenly, just days before the findings were to be officially presented. Effectively avoiding formal charges and a public hearing.”

Arthur swayed on his feet. The last vestiges of his authority, his reputation, shattered completely. The man who had once commanded their respect, who had held sway over their careers, was now exposed as a fraud, a man who had ducked accountability.

“It’s all… all a smear,” Arthur whispered, his voice broken. “Old enemies. Trying to get at me.”

But no one believed him. The silence that followed was heavy with judgment. The young officers, who had been taught to uphold the law, now saw their former mentor for what he truly was.
