Chapter 15: Three Days Later

A sudden, sharp clang echoed from the entrance to the range, interrupting the tense silence. The heavy steel door swung inward with a groan.

Arthur Pendelton strode into the bay, his face set in a grim mask. He wore a crisp, starched shirt and expensive slacks, looking completely out of place in the dusty, gunpowder-scented environment. His gaze immediately locked onto me.

He ignored the stunned expressions of the officers around him, the lingering tension from Gary’s confession. Arthur only saw me, standing quietly at the counter.

He walked straight up to Lane 4, the very lane Tyler Briggs had offered me, and pointed a finger directly at me. His voice boomed, cutting through the low hum of the ventilation system.

“You! Santos!” Arthur spat my last name like a curse.

I didn’t flinch. My hands remained still on the counter beside my ID.

“What are you doing here?” Arthur demanded, his eyes narrowed. “Trying to steal more from my family?”

Tyler Briggs shifted uncomfortably, clearing his throat. “Captain Pendelton, sir, we were just about to—”

Arthur cut him off with a wave of his hand. “Silence, Officer. This is a family matter.” He turned back to me, his face contorted with rage.

“Don’t think I haven’t been watching you, you opportunistic leech,” he snarled. “You emptied Sofia’s bank account, didn’t you? Before she was even cold in the ground.”

My stomach clenched. I felt the familiar burn of grief mix with a fresh surge of indignation.

“Forty-five thousand dollars!” Arthur shouted, loud enough for every ear on the range to hear. “Forty-five thousand dollars, gone! All her savings, meant for her future. Her legacy!”

He gestured wildly, addressing the small crowd of officers now gathered, their faces a mix of curiosity and discomfort.

“He thinks he can just walk in here, flash some old card, and pretend he’s a victim,” Arthur sneered at them, then back at me. “But I know the truth. You stole my daughter’s life savings. Every penny.”

The claim hung in the air, a poisonous cloud. I felt the weight of every officer’s gaze on me, their previous surprise at my military ID replaced by suspicion.

My jaw tightened. I wanted to lash out, to defend Sofia’s memory and my own name. But the words caught in my throat.

Arthur leaned closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that still carried. “You think I don’t know what you are, Santos? A grifter. A fake. You were never good enough for my daughter, and you never will be.”

He stood there, chest heaving, waiting for my reaction. I met his furious gaze, but I said nothing. The accusation, cold and heavy, settled over me like a shroud.
