My Father-In-Law Called Me an Unworthy Outsider at the Police Range—Until a Rookie Saw the Scar on My Hand and Read My Military ID
Arthur Pendelton, cornered and exposed, looked like a trapped animal. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape, for someone to back him up. But no one stepped forward.
Gary, the armorer, had been trying to make himself small behind the counter. He was nervously wiping down the glass with a rag, his hands still trembling slightly. The weight of his own earlier confession, and the presence of Hank Gallagher, clearly had him on edge.
“Captain Pendelton,” Hank said, his voice firm. “Perhaps you’d care to explain why you felt the need to misrepresent this veteran’s service record to your officers?”
Arthur finally found his voice, a high-pitched, defensive whine. “It was for department morale, Sergeant Major! This man… he wasn’t stable. He married my daughter. He’s an outsider. I was protecting my people!”
“Protecting them from what?” Hank asked, his gaze unwavering. “An American soldier who served with distinction?”
Gary, caught between the federal inspector and his former captain, suddenly blurted out, “He said… he said Mateo wasn’t properly married!”
The rag slipped from Gary’s hand and fell to the floor. His eyes were wide with a fresh wave of panic, realizing what he’d just said. He clapped a hand over his mouth.
Arthur froze, his face going from red to ashen. His eyes glared daggers at Gary, a silent threat.
But Gary, pushed past his breaking point, couldn’t un-say the words. He stammered, “He… he came here to the range, about four months ago. Just after Sofia… and he was asking me about the safety deposit box. He said Sofia’s marriage certificate wasn’t ‘legit’ for some reason. He wanted to make sure it wasn’t… submitted properly for the estate.”
My blood ran cold. The safety deposit box was where Sofia kept our important documents. Arthur had always claimed he hadn’t known what was in it.
“He asked me to… to check if there was any way to stop the estate filing,” Gary finished, his voice barely audible. “He even tried to pay me to ‘lose’ the original copy from the city records office.”
Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Gary’s arm. “You blithering idiot! Keep your mouth shut!”
But Hank Gallagher was faster. He stepped between Arthur and Gary, his hand coming down on Arthur’s shoulder, stopping him dead.
“Is that true, Captain?” Hank’s voice was low, dangerous. “You attempted to obstruct a legal estate filing? And tried to destroy a marriage record?”
Arthur’s face was a mask of terror. The carefully constructed facade of the respected retired captain shattered into a million pieces. The younger officers around him exchanged shocked glances, their faces grim.
The accusation of stealing money from Sofia was heinous, but this – attempting to invalidate her marriage, to erase my legal standing – was a direct assault on Sofia’s memory and final wishes.
