Chapter 15: Three Days Later

The revelation about Arthur’s past, and the missing evidence, stripped him bare in front of his former subordinates. He stood there, a defeated, pathetic figure, all his bluster gone.

Hank Gallagher calmly tucked his phone back into his pocket. His job was done. The truth, ugly as it was, was out.

Elena, who had been listening to every word, her face a mix of sorrow and grim determination, finally stepped forward. She looked at her father, her eyes filled with a profound disappointment.

Then she looked at me, a silent apology in her gaze.

She raised the cream-colored envelope, still sealed with wax. Her hands were no longer trembling. There was a newfound resolve in her posture.

“This is from Sofia,” Elena said, her voice clear and strong in the sudden quiet. She ignored her father completely. “She wanted us to read it. Together.”

Arthur made a desperate lunge, his hand shooting out towards the letter. “No! Don’t you dare, Elena! That’s private family business!”

But I was closer. My hand came up, a barrier between Arthur and Elena. He recoiled, bumping into Officer Tyler Briggs, who did not even flinch.

Elena carefully broke the wax seal, the small cracking sound echoing in the stillness of the range. She unfolded the single sheet of paper inside. Her eyes scanned the elegant script, and a fresh tear traced a path down her cheek.

She took a deep breath, steadying herself.

“My dearest Elena, and my beloved Mateo,” she began, her voice quivering slightly as she read aloud.

“If you are reading this, it means my father has done exactly what I feared he would.”

Arthur made a small, choked sound, but Elena kept reading.

“He never approved of Mateo,” she continued, her voice gaining strength. “He thought Mateo wasn’t ‘good enough’ because he wasn’t from here, because he wasn’t… like us. Because he came from nothing and built a life himself.”

The words were a brutal, direct indictment of Arthur’s xenophobia, spoken from beyond the grave.

“I know he will try to invalidate our marriage,” Elena read, her voice firm, “to make Mateo a ‘foreigner’ again in the eyes of the law. To steal everything we built together, to try and erase my choice, my love.”

My heart ached with every word, a painful reminder of Sofia’s foresight, her understanding of her father’s true character.

“Please, Elena,” Sofia’s letter concluded, “protect Mateo. He is a good man. He deserves to be happy. Don’t let Father’s bitter pride destroy what we shared.”

Elena finished reading, her voice thick with emotion. She held the letter out, letting everyone see Sofia’s neat, familiar handwriting.

Arthur Pendelton stood frozen, his face devoid of all color, his eyes staring blankly at the floor. The last, desperate attempts to control the narrative, to twist the truth, were utterly, completely crushed by Sofia’s final, heartbreaking words.
