Chapter 17: Ashes and Aftermath

The relentless public scrutiny had battered Mark Hawthorne beyond anything even David Jenkins, his ruthless lawyer, could have anticipated. With his career in tatters, endorsements gone, and his public image irrevocably damaged, Mark was desperate to minimize any further legal fallout. The last thing he needed was a prolonged, public trial that would continue to dissect his life.

Sarah Albright received a call from David Jenkins. It was an olive branch, carefully extended, albeit begrudgingly. He proposed a private, mediated settlement negotiation, a plea deal for me. The idea was to avoid a full trial, which would undoubtedly dredge up even more damaging revelations about Mark.

Sarah presented the offer to me in the medical ward. My infection was still stubbornly present, and the chronic fatigue was a constant companion. The thought of avoiding a grueling trial, with its endless cross-examinations and public spectacle, held a certain appeal.

“They’re offering a reduced sentence for the arson charge,” Sarah explained, her voice cautious. “Probation, likely. Community service. But there’s a catch, of course.”

“There always is,” I said, my voice hoarse.

“They want to seal the details of Mark’s financial transfers and Chloe’s testimony from public record as part of the deal,” she revealed. “Essentially, a non-disclosure on the specifics of his betrayal. They want to contain the damage to his reputation.”

My jaw tightened. He wanted to erase the evidence of his cruelty, to make it as if it never happened. To save face, even in his ruin. It was the ultimate petty cruelty, trying to bury the truth after it had already destroyed him.

“And what about the property he promised Chloe?” I asked, my voice cold. “Does this deal ensure he has no claim to anything else?”

“It would involve a swift, no-fault divorce, with a fair division of remaining assets,” Sarah confirmed. “The mansion is gone, of course. But they’re desperate to keep the actual audio recording out of any future proceedings or public knowledge.”

“The audio recording?” I asked, confused. I hadn’t given Sarah any audio recording. My heart began to pound.

Sarah looked at me, a knowing glint in her eyes. “Lena, did you happen to record anything… specific… in the hospital?”

A memory flashed through my mind: my phone, tucked under the hospital pillow, set to record to send voice notes to my sister. I had forgotten I had left it on. The thought sent a jolt through me.

“I… I might have,” I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. “I used to send voice notes to my sister when I was too tired to type. It was just recording… I overheard him. On the phone.”

Sarah’s face lit up, a rare, triumphant smile spreading across her face.

“Lena, that’s it,” she breathed. “That changes everything.”

“It has his voice,” I explained, the words tumbling out. “Promising the house to Chloe. Mocking me, my ‘pathetic sacrifices.’ Three days after my surgery.”

Sarah leaned forward, her eyes wide with excitement.

“That recording, Lena, is the leverage we need,” she said. “It’s irrefutable proof of his intent, his callousness. It’s the smoking gun.”

The plea deal offered a way out of a long, painful trial, but it also threatened to bury the most damning evidence of Mark’s betrayal. The decision was mine: accept the reduced sentence and let Mark’s deepest secrets remain hidden, or reject the deal and risk everything on a full trial. The choice weighed heavily on me.

But the existence of that recording, unbeknownst to Mark, changed the game. It was my final, secret weapon.
