Leo knew that local police Captain Sadowski was compromised. Taking the evidence to him would be signing his own death warrant. He bypassed municipal authorities entirely. Through the dark hours of the night, he drove the two hours to the US Attorney’s Office in Newark.
He walked into the sterile federal building at dawn, exhausted but resolute. After navigating layers of security, he found himself in the office of Assistant US Attorney Marcus DeLuca. DeLuca, a man with sharp, uncompromising eyes and a reputation for dismantling organized crime, listened in silence.
Leo laid out the evidence on DeLuca’s polished desk: the encrypted USB hard drive containing either Clara’s voice recording or Gable’s confession, Vinny’s gold watch, Clara’s notary seal, and the stack of fraudulent property transfers and cashier’s checks.
DeLuca examined each piece, his expression unyielding. He picked up the hard drive, his gaze intense. “This is significant, Mr. Pendelton.”
He stood, walking to his window, looking out over the waking city. “The Moretti syndicate. Their financial wing has been elusive for years.”
Within minutes, DeLuca was on the phone, his voice crisp and authoritative. He issued federal arrest warrants for Clara Pendelton, Howard Gable, and Captain Frank Sadowski. He then assigned a team of federal agents to immediately protect me and Toby, recognizing the danger Leo had placed himself in. Justice, it seemed, was finally in motion.
