👉 Previous choice: You chose Option B – Conceal Vinny inside the subterranean supply vault and observe the intruder.

“In here, quickly,” I urged, pointing to the heavy steel door of the subterranean supply vault. Vinny, still weak and disoriented, stumbled inside. I pushed the door shut, locking it with a heavy thud, the sound swallowed by the thick concrete walls.

I then moved silently through the access tunnel, back to the main control room. I peered around the doorframe. Clara stood there, her back to me, her silhouette framed by the dim console lights. Her fingers danced across the digital error logs, her expression unreadable.

She scrolled, her eyes fixed on the screen, then let out a low, humorless laugh. She turned, her gaze meeting mine. There was no surprise in her eyes, only a cold, calculating resolve.

“Arthur,” she said, her voice smooth, utterly devoid of emotion. “I knew you’d seen the override key.”

I stood frozen. She knew. She didn’t flinch, didn’t stammer.

“But who’s going to believe you?” she continued, stepping closer, her gaze sweeping over my work clothes, my slightly disheveled appearance. “A quiet crematory worker, past his prime? Against a respected notary, a pillar of the community?”

A shiver ran down my spine. Her words were a taunt, a threat. “The family trusts me, Arthur. The police department certainly does.” She paused, a thin, cruel smile playing on her lips. “I’ve already taken care of some paperwork, just in case. For your… ‘well-being’.”

She gave me one last dismissive look, then turned and walked out, her footsteps echoing in the empty hall. I heard the main door click shut behind her. The cold had truly set in now, seeping into my bones.

I didn’t know what “paperwork” she meant, but the hair on my arms stood on end. She was already moving to discredit me, to paint me as unstable. She was playing a different game, one I hadn’t even realized had started.
