Leo called me from Newark, his voice filled with a desperate relief. “It’s done, Dad. DeLuca has everything. They’re sending agents for you and Toby. I’m coming home now.”
I told him to be careful, to take the long way, but the mob had faster eyes and longer reach. As Leo drove his old sedan back from Newark, cruising down Route 22, two unmarked syndicate vehicles swerved abruptly, ramming his car from both sides. Metal shrieked, tires squealed, and Leo’s car spun off the highway, crashing into the guardrail.
I received the call ten minutes later. I rushed to the scene, federal agents already swarming the crumpled wreckage. Leo lay on the asphalt shoulder, two dark stains blooming on his chest. His eyes fluttered open as I knelt beside him, his hand reaching for mine.
“Dad,” he choked, his breath shallow. “The drive… they wanted it. I wouldn’t…”
He trailed off, his grip weakening. Tears streamed down my face. “You did good, son,” I whispered, clutching his hand to my cheek. “So good.”
Federal marshals had already apprehended the hitmen, their faces grim, but it was too late. Leo’s eyes, so full of courage and conviction just hours before, glazed over. His final breath shuddered out. My son, my loyal, earnest son, died in my arms on the cold, hard pavement. The evidence was safe, but the cost was unbearable.
