When Midnight Strikes at the Crematorium, a Father Discovers His Daughter-in-Law's Dark Mob Secret Inside the Furnace

“This way,” I whispered, pulling Vinny off the gurney. We moved quickly, silently, through the dim corridors of the basement, past stacks of unused urns and cleaning supplies. The sounds from upstairs grew more distinct now: heavy footsteps, a drawer being pulled open then slammed shut.
I led Vinny to the rear of the building, where the old coal chute, long disused, opened into an alleyway. The air was cool and damp. “It’s tight,” I warned, “but it’s our only way out without being seen.”
Vinny nodded, his face pale. He squeezed himself into the dark opening, grunting softly. I followed, pushing him gently, until we emerged into the crisp night air behind the crematory. My old, beat-up pickup truck was parked just around the corner.
We scrambled into the truck bed just as the crematory’s back door burst open. A burly man with a shaved head, undoubtedly a Moretti enforcer, stepped out, scanning the alley. I ducked, pulling Vinny down, covering us both with a stack of grimy canvas tarps I kept for hauling debris.
The enforcer stood for a long moment, his eyes sweeping over the empty alley, before he swore loudly and went back inside.
I started the truck, my hands gripping the wheel so tightly my knuckles were white. The engine coughed to life. I drove away, my gaze fixed on the rearview mirror, until the crematory’s dim lights vanished behind me.
I found an old motel on Route 1, paid cash, and settled Vinny in. Before I left, he pressed his signet ring and the crumpled deed into my hand. “Proof, Arthur. Don’t lose it.”
I drove home as dawn broke, the first rays of sunlight painting the sky. The proof of Clara’s depravity felt heavy in my pocket. I would confront her, armed with truth, before she even realized her disposal had failed.
