Chapter 20: A Quiet Birthday

Kevon Brooks’s deposition was a stark contrast to Darnell’s arrogant defiance. When he entered the conference room, he was visibly nervous, his eyes darting around the room, avoiding direct eye contact with anyone, especially me. He sat hunched in his chair, picking at a loose thread on his jacket. He was also flanked by Marcus’s lawyers, but they seemed less assured in his presence.

Attorney Ramirez began with the same calm, probing questions he’d used with Darnell. Kevon’s answers, however, were entirely different. They were vague, hesitant, and riddled with contradictions.

“Do you recall being near Ms. Greene’s classroom on the afternoon of October 12th?” Ramirez asked.

Kevon mumbled. “Uh… maybe. I don’t know. We, uh, we walk all over the school, you know.”

“Who is ‘we’?”

“Me and… and Darnell sometimes. And Tashaun.” He glanced nervously towards Marcus’s lawyers, then quickly looked away, as if afraid of their reaction.

His visible distress was palpable, a stark indication that he knew more than he was letting on. He was clearly intimidated, caught between the truth and the fear of Darnell and Marcus’s wrath. It was a small, personal cruelty, seeing this young man so utterly terrified, so clearly coerced into silence. His fear made him a victim of Marcus’s manipulation too.

When Ramirez produced the varsity button, Kevon’s hands actually trembled as he picked it up. He dropped it almost immediately, as if it were a burning coal.

“You recognize this button?” Ramirez asked gently.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s a school button,” Kevon stammered, avoiding my gaze. “Everyone wears ‘em.”

“Do you own one like it?”

“Uh, yeah. Maybe. I think so.”

His answers were almost painful to listen to, a string of evasions and half-truths. He couldn’t lie with Darnell’s practiced ease, but he also couldn’t bring himself to tell the truth. He was trapped, a frightened kid caught in an adult’s web of lies. His stammering, his inability to meet our eyes, spoke volumes about the pressure he was under.

Ramirez then asked about Jamal’s scholarship application.

“I… I don’t know anything about that,” Kevon whispered, his voice barely audible. “I didn’t see anything.”

“You didn’t see Darnell or Tashaun near Jamal’s desk?”

Kevon shook his head vehemently. “No! I didn’t see anything!” He paused, then added, “Darnell wouldn’t do that. He’s a good guy.” The lie was transparent, delivered with a forced conviction that belied his shaking hands. His loyalty to Darnell, born of fear and influence, was a desperate shield.

Marcus’s lawyers remained largely silent during Kevon’s deposition, occasionally stepping in to object to a question, but otherwise letting him flounder. They clearly knew he was a weak link, but their primary goal was to prevent him from admitting anything concrete. The lack of support they showed him, their willingness to let him squirm, felt like a quiet cruelty, reinforcing the idea that he was expendable.

As Ramirez continued, Kevon grew increasingly agitated, his answers becoming more contradictory. He would say one thing, then immediately backtrack, his anxiety visibly escalating. He wiped sweat from his brow, his breathing shallow. He was clearly under immense internal pressure, the guilt warring with his fear.

Finally, Kevon burst out, his voice a choked plea. “I just… I just want to go. I don’t know anything else! Darnell said… Darnell said I shouldn’t talk to anyone!”

The confession, even in its terrified vagueness, was significant. Darnell had actively pressured him to stay silent. It confirmed my suspicion: Marcus wasn’t just covering up; he was actively coercing the witnesses. This was not a random act; it was a conspiracy.

Ramirez pressed him again. “Darnell said not to talk about what, Kevon?”

Kevon squeezed his eyes shut, shaking his head. “I can’t. I just can’t. I don’t want to get in trouble. Darnell will… he’ll be mad.” His fear of Darnell, a powerful student, was more immediate than his fear of the legal system. It was a tangible measure of the control Darnell, and by extension Marcus, held over him.

The deposition ended without a direct admission about the torn application, but Kevon’s visible distress, his fear-driven lies, and his slip about Darnell’s threats provided valuable insight. He was a scared kid, desperately trying to protect himself, and his fear suggested that there was a truth he was terrified of revealing. His silence was a scream, a testament to the intimidation he faced, another victim of Marcus’s pervasive influence.
