My younger brother Raymond told me my daughter Chloe was stealing from our real estate firm and needed to be stripped of her trust fund immediately.
The truth about Raymond’s sacrifice had barely begun to sink in when Clara called with another bombshell. Her voice on the phone was tight with controlled fury.
“Arthur, I just intercepted an email exchange. It’s from Chloe.”
My stomach clenched. “What now, Clara?”
“She’s been in contact with a distressed-asset hedge fund,” Clara explained. “It’s called ‘Vulture Capital Group.’ They specialize in buying up bankrupt companies for pennies on the dollar.”
A cold, horrifying premonition seized me. “What does Chloe want with them?”
“She was giving them inside information on Pendelton Holdings’ financial state,” Clara revealed. “Detailed forecasts of our imminent insolvency. She purposely allowed the rent default, Arthur. She forced her own ouster, knowing it would trigger a cascade effect.”
My head snapped back. “She did this on purpose? To collapse the firm?”
“Exactly,” Clara confirmed. “Her plan was to force Pendelton Holdings into receivership, trigger a forced liquidation. Then, Vulture Capital Group, with Chloe as an undisclosed partner, would swoop in and buy our prime real estate assets—the Pendelton Tower, the entire portfolio—at bankruptcy prices.”
My jaw dropped. The betrayal was deeper, more calculated than I could have ever imagined. Chloe hadn’t just covered her tracks; she was actively trying to exploit the firm’s vulnerability for personal gain, turning our family legacy into her personal bargain bin.
“She wanted to bankrupt us,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “She used my fury against Raymond, my trust in her, as leverage to destroy everything.”
“She needed a public trigger,” Clara added. “Your confrontation with Raymond, the demand for an audit, the financial chaos—it all played perfectly into her hands. It looked like Raymond’s mismanagement, forcing a collapse. But it was Chloe orchestrating it from the shadows.”
The sheer audacity, the cold-blooded manipulation, left me breathless. Chloe hadn’t merely hidden a debt; she had set a trap. She had systematically undermined the company, provoked a public crisis, and used my blind devotion to set the stage for its ultimate downfall, all so she could profit from its ashes.
The fight was no longer about clearing Raymond’s name. It was about saving Pendelton Holdings from my own daughter.
