My younger brother Raymond told me my daughter Chloe was stealing from our real estate firm and needed to be stripped of her trust fund immediately.
The scent of polished wood and nervous tension filled the air on the 14th floor of Pendelton Holdings. I had called an emergency closed-door board session, leveraging every ounce of my remaining authority. The stakes had never been higher.
I clutched the thick leather binder Clara had prepared, filled with Martha Gable’s sworn affidavit, Evelyn Ross’s forensic audits, and the damning email exchanges from Chloe. My hands trembled slightly, but my resolve was solid.
Board members began to arrive, their faces a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Harrison Kincaid, the Chairman, entered last, his expression grave. He took his seat at the head of the long mahogany table.
A few minutes later, the double doors to the boardroom opened again. Chloe Pendelton swept in, flanked by two sharp-suited legal counsels. She walked with an air of confident expectation, her chin held high. She nodded curtly to the board, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips.
She believed she was coming to watch Raymond’s downfall, to see the firm crumble into receivership, paving the way for her orchestrated takeover. She still played the role of the mistreated daughter, wronged by her uncle, demanding full restitution and a clean slate.
Her eyes met mine across the room. There was a glimmer of triumph in their depths, a silent challenge. She thought she had won.
Raymond, who had arrived earlier, sat silently at the far end of the table, his face a mask of weary resignation. He hadn’t said a word since I’d asked him to attend, hadn’t defended himself against the initial accusations in the board memo. He simply waited.
I met Chloe’s gaze, my own expression carefully blank. This wasn’t going to be the show she expected. This wasn’t about Raymond’s ouster. This was about finally exposing the truth.
I cleared my throat, the sound unusually loud in the tense silence. “Thank you all for coming. We have a matter of extreme urgency and importance to discuss regarding the financial stability and future of Pendelton Holdings.”
I paused, looking at each face around the table. “I have asked my sister, Clara Pendelton, to present the findings of an independent investigation.”
Clara, poised and professional, stepped forward, the thick leather binder now in her hands. The atmosphere in the room shifted, the casual murmurs dying down completely. Every eye was on her.
