Chapter 20: Epilogue — The Coastal Retreat (The Following Month)

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee hung heavy in the air of the small Boston diner. Outside, a light drizzle blurred the city lights. I sat in a booth, watching the door, my stomach twisting with nerves. Six years. Six years since Clara and I had spoken, a bitter disagreement over a corporate acquisition splitting us apart.

Then, the bell above the door chimed. Clara Pendelton walked in, her silver hair cut short, her eyes as sharp as I remembered. She spotted me and approached, a neutral expression on her face.

“Arthur,” she said, her voice cool but not unkind.

“Clara,” I replied, standing up. We didn’t hug. We just stood there for a moment, two siblings navigating a chasm.

She slid into the booth opposite me. “You didn’t call me for coffee after six years just to catch up on the weather.”

I took a deep breath. “Raymond is trying to destroy Chloe. He’s trying to push me out of the company, claiming I’m losing my mind.”

Clara’s gaze was steady. “I know.”

That single word hit me like a physical blow. “You know? How?”

She took a sip of water. “I never really stopped watching the firm, Arthur. Not after all our years of building it.”

“What have you found?” I pressed, leaning forward.

Clara reached into her briefcase and pulled out a slim file, placing it on the table. “For the last eighteen months, I’ve been tracking a series of offshore transfers. Disguised as consulting fees. They’re all tied to a familiar name.”

My eyebrows furrowed. “Who?”

“Croft Appraisal Group,” she said, her voice dropping slightly. “Julian Croft. He’s been revaluing Pendelton Holdings’ commercial properties, Arthur. And not always ethically.”

My mind raced. Croft was our go-to appraiser. A respected name. The thought of him being involved in something shady…

“What kind of revaluations?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Clara met my gaze, a grim set to her jaw. “The kind that make assets look a lot more valuable than they actually are. The kind that secure loans you shouldn’t be getting.”

A chill ran down my spine, deeper than the damp Boston air. The firm’s recent financial struggles, the bounced mortgage payment… it all clicked into place with a horrifying logic.

“Arthur,” she added, her voice hardening, “it looks like Raymond isn’t just targeting Chloe. He’s propping up a house of cards.”

My younger brother Raymond told me my daughter Chloe was stealing from our real estate firm and needed to be stripped of her trust fund immediately.
