King Valerius roared, his voice cracking with desperation. He lunged from his throne, guards rushing to restrain him, but his eyes were fixed on Kael, blazing with a terror born of more than just prejudice. “Silence! These are lies! Sorcery!” he shrieked, struggling against his own men. “That creature is a danger! A prophecy of chaos!”

Isolde stepped forward once more, her gaze firm, meeting Valerius’s furious eyes without flinching. “He speaks of prophecies, but he speaks only of his own fear.”

She looked at the Council, her voice clear and steady. “During my time as Queen Elara’s attendant, I explored every hidden passage and forgotten nook of this castle. The King’s personal study holds a secret, one he believed forever safe.”

She described the location of a concealed compartment in the King’s study, a place of personal privacy and hidden agendas. It was behind a loose stone in the mantelpiece, subtly disguised with a faint carving of the Thane crest. Gareth, one of Elara’s loyalists, stepped forward.

“I know this compartment,” Gareth confirmed, his voice echoing in the stunned hall. “I saw the King’s father access it many years ago, when I was a junior guard.”

Several Council elders murmured their agreement, remembering the late King Thane as a man of many secrets. The compartment was accessible only to those in direct service, a private archive of royal truths the King had kept hidden even from his own advisors.

At the Council’s command, two guards, now hesitant and conflicted, were dispatched to retrieve the contents. The moments that followed were excruciatingly tense, the only sound the furious, guttural protests of Valerius, who continued to struggle against his guards, his terror palpable.

The guards returned swiftly, carrying a small, heavy wooden box. Inside, carefully sealed with an ancient royal wax, were two documents. The first was a decree, its script elaborate and archaic, bearing the seal of King Alaric Thane, Valerius’s late father.

A council elder, his spectacles perched on his nose, carefully broke the seal and began to read aloud, his voice grave. “By ancient edict, and by the sacred duty to protect the peace of the Eastern Kingdoms, it is decreed that any child born with visible draconic traits, regardless of lineage, shall be immediately exiled to prevent the reawakening of ancient prophecies of chaos and discord.”

A collective gasp swept through the hall. The words were clear, chilling. This was not Valerius’s prejudice alone, but an ancient fear, a forgotten law.

But then, the elder’s voice grew even more somber as he picked up the second document—a personal letter, its parchment brittle with age, penned in King Alaric’s own hand. This was attached to the decree, a private explanation for his son.

“My dearest Valerius,” the elder read, “this edict is a burden, but a necessary one. Should such a child appear, it would be seen as a weakness in our line, a sign of ancient curses resurfacing. The prophets would call for my head, for your head. The Western Reaches, with their strange reverence for these creatures, would rise in power, claiming ancient rights. You must, should this come to pass, act swiftly and ruthlessly. Frame the mother, deny the child, protect the throne at all costs. For the stability of the kingdom, you must never appear weak or compromised by this ancient blight.”

The letter concluded with a specific, cruel instruction: “Destroy all evidence of their existence. Make sure no one, not even yourself, is tempted to soften to such an abomination.”

The words hung in the air, cold and undeniable. Valerius’s treachery was laid bare, not just as simple prejudice, but as a calculated act of self-preservation, driven by a deeply ingrained fear of losing power and exposing a perceived weakness in his lineage. The King’s father had explicitly instructed him to be ruthless, to discard his own child if it meant maintaining the throne, to specifically frame the mother. The entire Council now understood the full, chilling extent of his betrayal.

Valerius slumped, utterly defeated, his face ashen. His royal guards, who had once served him with unwavering loyalty, now released him, stepping away as if repulsed. The full weight of his deeds, and the shocking truth of his father’s chilling legacy, had finally crushed him.
