Condemned to the Pit for Birthing a 'Monster,' a Queen Discovers Her King-Husband's Treachery and Her Child's True Nature
The Council deliberated for hours, the fate of Prince Kael hanging heavy in the air. Finally, Chief Elder Thorvin, his face etched with exhaustion, approached Elara.
“Queen Elara,” he began, his voice weary. “The Council has reached a decision regarding the regency and the matter of your son.”
Elara’s heart pounded against her ribs. She tightened her hold on Kael, who chirped softly in her arms. Isolde stood protectively beside her, her hand resting on Elara’s shoulder.
“We offer you the position of Queen Regent,” Thorvin announced, “to guide the Eastern Kingdoms through this period of transition. Your honor has been restored, and your wisdom is respected.”
A murmur of approval rippled through the Council. It was the position she had fought for, the power she had nearly died for, the chance to reclaim her place and reshape the kingdom. The weight of Valerius’s cruelty, of everything she had endured, would finally be redeemed. But then Thorvin’s expression grew somber.
“However,” he continued, “due to the ancient edict and the fears of the populace, the condition for your regency is that Prince Kael must be placed in a protected, concealed sanctuary. He cannot live openly in the castle, nor can he be publicly acknowledged as heir. He would be raised in safety, of course, with your visits permitted, but unseen.”
The words hit Elara like a physical blow. Hide her son? Treat him as a secret, a shame? After all she had endured to expose Valerius’s lies, the Council still demanded she deny Kael’s true nature, even if for his “safety.” It was a form of institutional cruelty, a subtle echo of Valerius’s prejudice, demanding that Kael live in the shadows. The wound was deep, the choice agonizing. They were asking her to sacrifice Kael’s identity, his right to exist freely, for the sake of the kingdom’s “stability.”
Elara looked down at Kael, his blue eyes gazing up at her with innocent trust. She remembered the cold, desolate keep, the broken feeding trough, the feral existence Valerius had condemned him to. She remembered the despair of the Pit, where her sanity had frayed, and the fierce hope that had ignited when she realized Kael was alive and special.
She had fought so hard for his right to exist, for the truth of his heritage. To accept these terms would be to betray him, to re-imprison him, not in a pit, but in a life of secrecy and denial. The throne felt cold, hollow, poisoned by the very fear it demanded she appease.
Elara took a deep breath, her gaze sweeping over the faces of the Council members. Their intentions might be good, their fears understandable, but their solution was unacceptable.
“Chief Elder Thorvin,” Elara said, her voice clear and strong, filled with a resolve that silenced all murmurs. “I thank the Council for their offer. But I cannot accept.”
A stunned silence fell over the hall. Thorvin’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Your Majesty?” he stammered. “This is your chance to reclaim your rightful place. To lead the kingdom.”
“My rightful place,” Elara replied, her voice unwavering, “is with my son. I will not hide him. I will not make him a prisoner of fear and prejudice, not after all we have endured to bring his truth to light.”
She clutched Kael tighter, her eyes burning with fierce maternal love. “I abdicate my claim to the throne of the Eastern Kingdoms. I choose a life with Kael, wherever we can be safe and accepted, wherever he can live freely, as the Azure Heir he truly is.”
Isolde, standing beside Elara, watched with profound admiration. This was the Queen she had fought for, a woman of unshakeable conviction and boundless love. Without a moment’s hesitation, Isolde knelt before Elara.
“Your Majesty,” Isolde pledged, her voice resonating with deep loyalty. “My loyalty is not to a crown, but to truth, and to you. I will follow you, and Prince Kael, wherever your path may lead.”
Elara looked at Isolde, a wistful smile touching her lips. “Then we are not alone.”
The Council was aghast, dismayed by her choice. The regency would have to go to the Western Reaches elder, a path that would reshape the balance of power in ways none had anticipated. Elara, however, felt a profound sense of peace. She had lost a kingdom, yes, but she had reclaimed her child, her identity, and her unyielding love. The future was uncertain, but for the first time in a very long time, it was truly her own.
