The Royal Hall fell into a stunned silence, broken only by King Valerius’s ragged breathing. The elder councilman, his voice shaking with the gravity of his task, carefully placed the old King’s decree and letter back into the wooden box. The irrefutable evidence, laid bare, left no room for doubt.

Chief Elder Thorvin, the oldest and most respected member of the Council, rose slowly from his seat. His gaze, usually gentle, was now stern and unwavering as he looked at Valerius.

“King Valerius Thane,” Thorvin’s voice resonated with the full authority of the Council, “you have been found guilty of treason, for fabricating royal records. You have been found guilty of deception, for knowingly presenting false information to this esteemed Council. And you have been found guilty of the illegal imprisonment and attempted murder of Queen Elara Cairn and your own son, Prince Kael.”

Valerius sagged, utterly broken. His head hung low, his earlier fury completely extinguished, replaced by a profound, humiliating defeat. The public exposure of his base fears and cynical ambition had stripped him of every shred of dignity.

“For these heinous crimes,” Thorvin continued, his voice echoing in the silent hall, “the Grand Council, by the ancient laws of these kingdoms, hereby strips you of your crown and title. You are exiled from the Eastern Kingdoms, never to return.”

Two burly guards, their faces grim, stepped forward. They unceremoniously pulled the crown from Valerius’s head, its gold glinting for a final, fleeting moment before it was handed to Thorvin. Valerius offered no resistance, his eyes vacant. His once-regal robes suddenly seemed ill-fitting, a mockery of his former power. They escorted him from the hall, his slumped figure a stark contrast to his earlier, arrogant entrance. His public and humiliating fall was complete.

Chief Elder Thorvin then turned to Elara, his expression softening. “Queen Elara Cairn, you are hereby exonerated of all accusations. Your name and honor are fully restored.”

A wave of applause, hesitant at first, then growing in strength, swept through the hall. The Western Reaches’ representatives cheered openly, their faces alight with triumph. Isolde, standing beside Elara, offered a small, proud smile.

But the victory was bittersweet. Prince Kael, still in Elara’s arms, was a visible dragon hatchling, a living embodiment of the ancient edict that had condemned his father. The Council now faced a complex dilemma.

“The matter of Prince Kael,” Chief Elder Thorvin announced, his voice tinged with unease, “remains delicate. The ancient edict, while cruelly exploited by the former King, nonetheless holds sway over the fears of many.”

A tense debate ensued among the Council members. Whispers of the “ancient prophecies” and “chaos” still circulated, their roots deep in generations of cultural fear and prejudice. Some argued that Kael, despite his innocence, could not remain in the royal court, lest he inadvertently trigger unrest. Others, swayed by Seraphina’s explanation of his sacred lineage, advocated for his protection.

“The Eastern Kingdoms are in a precarious state,” one elder argued. “The people are fearful. A visible dragon heir… it could spark civil strife.”

Another countered, “But to exile him now, after so much injustice, would be another betrayal! A child cannot be punished for his birth.”

The power vacuum left by Valerius’s exile was immediate and destabilizing. The Council discussed the need for a temporary regent, someone to guide the kingdom through this tumultuous period. The Western Reaches, emboldened by Elara’s vindication, put forward one of their own esteemed elders as a candidate, a move that would significantly shift the balance of power.

Elara watched and listened, Kael stirring softly in her arms. Her name was cleared, Valerius was gone, but the path ahead for her son, and for her, remained fraught with uncertainty. The victory was immense, but the consequences were far from simple. The prejudice Valerius had nurtured still lingered, a pervasive shadow that threatened to define Kael’s future.
