Framed by a mysterious glass sphere in a locked study, a disgraced WWII investigator must outsmart his military mentor.
Arthur spent a day constructing his plan, fueled by cold coffee and a grim determination. He knew Garrick wouldn’t expose his corruption network publicly. He needed to find a way to trap Garrick without sacrificing the innocent families on the microfilm list.
He acquired a forged courier pass, a relic from an old CID case that proved surprisingly useful. It allowed him access to the desolate, concrete-walled compound of War Department Supply Vault 4, a vast, forgotten storage facility in rural Virginia. Garrick’s private archives, Silas had said.
Under the cover of thick fog, Arthur bypassed two perimeter guards, his movements silent, honed by years of field work. He carried the original optical lens, still containing the microfilm, tucked securely inside a waterproof pouch. He also had Alistair Krol’s yellowed letter.
He reached the main gate of the subterranean storage bay. It was heavily secured, but not impenetrable for someone who knew the old military protocols.
He left a written note, pinned conspicuously to the guard shack door: “Colonel Garrick – I have the original microfilm reel. Meet me inside the storage bay. Alone. Clara’s safety depends on it. – A.F.”
He knew Garrick would find it. He knew Garrick wouldn’t resist the bait. The colonel’s arrogance wouldn’t allow him to believe Arthur could truly expose him, especially not after the relentless smear campaign. Garrick would come, convinced he could regain the microfilm and finally silence Arthur forever.
Arthur entered the cavernous supply bay, the air cold and still. Rows upon rows of wooden crates, stacked high, formed a silent, oppressive maze. He walked deep into the heart of the vault, past the numbered bays. This was Garrick’s domain, his private kingdom of secrets.
He found a secluded spot, near a crate marked “Classified: Munich, 1945,” and waited. His heart hammered, but his hands were steady. He felt a peculiar calm. This was the end. One way or another.
