Chapter 17: The Fall of the House

#content-1

👉 Previous action: State Police breached the house, and Arthur Carver tackled Julian.

The Carver residence, once a picture of suburban calm, now buzzed with the stark reality of crisis. Four local news crews, drawn by the viral live stream and the sudden swarm of police, jostled for position along the driveway, their cameras flashing.

State troopers methodically placed Julian Carver and Detective Halloway in handcuffs, their faces grim as they were led outside, past the glaring lights of the media. Julian sneered at me, a promise of future retribution in his eyes. Halloway kept his head down, avoiding the lenses.

Maya, her hands still trembling, walked directly to the lead investigator from the State Attorney General’s office, a woman with sharp, observant eyes. She handed over the physical trust documents, the lab report detailing the thallium poisoning, and the unedited audio tapes with their shocking background conversation.

“This is all of it,” Maya said, her voice thin but resolute. “Everything you need.”

Then, Arthur. His shoulders slumped, his face hollowed, he was escorted out in handcuffs as well, for his complicity in the 2018 hit-and-run cover-up. He didn’t look at me, his gaze fixed on the ground.

Helen sat sobbing on the front porch steps, clutching a small, embroidered handkerchief. Federal agents moved swiftly through the house, seizing Julian’s financial assets, a whirlwind of official forms and confiscated hard drives. The house, once my refuge, now felt like a tomb.
