The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind Julian and Chloe, plunging the executive suite into an unnerving silence. I stood by the expansive window, my back to the empty room, watching the city glitter below. My hands, hidden behind me, balled into fists. The insult, the sheer audacity of Julian’s performance, still burned.

But the board had given me tools for this exact scenario.

I walked to the secure internal line, dialing Harrison Croft’s direct extension. The independent Board Legal Counsel picked up on the second ring, his voice crisp and professional.

“Claire,” he said, without preamble. He knew why I was calling.

“Harrison, I’m activating my authority as Chief Corporate Advisor,” I stated, keeping my voice level, every word precise. “I require an immediate, unannounced forensic audit of Julian Kincaid’s entire department.”

There was a brief pause on the line. “Understood,” Harrison confirmed. “The scope?”

“Everything,” I replied. “Every account, every transaction, every offshore transfer, going back five years. I want a full team deployed within the hour.”

“Consider it done,” Harrison said, his tone devoid of personal opinion, only efficiency. “We’ll work discreetly, but expect Julian to react once the inquiries begin.”

“That’s precisely the point,” I murmured, hanging up the phone. I knew Julian’s reaction wouldn’t be pretty.

Across town, Julian paced his newly redecorated office, the same office he’d claimed for himself after maneuvering my father out years ago. His phone buzzed with an alert from the accounting department—an unannounced forensic audit. His face tightened, a vein throbbing at his temple.

He picked up his personal cell, dialing a number from memory.

“Miller,” he snapped, without a greeting. “We have a problem.”

Captain Vincent Miller, precinct commander of the 17th, answered warily from his desk, the fluorescent lights reflecting off his bald head. “Julian. What can I do for you?”

“My wife is making trouble,” Julian spat, ignoring the pleasantries. “She’s digging where she shouldn’t be. I need her distracted. Permanently.”

Miller shifted in his seat. “Distracted, how?” His voice held a hint of apprehension.

“She has a brother,” Julian continued, a dangerous edge to his voice. “Leo. Fragile. Needs constant supervision. Known for driving around, aimlessly.”

Miller cleared his throat. “I’m not sure I follow, Julian.”

“You owe me, Miller,” Julian’s voice dropped, ice-cold. “Remember that loan? The one that cleared your gambling debts with the wrong people? The one that saved your pension?”

A heavy silence stretched. Miller’s hand tightened around the phone. He remembered. The thirty thousand dollars, no questions asked.

“Find something,” Julian ordered. “A traffic infraction. A public disturbance. Anything. Pick him up. Keep him off the streets, make it unpleasant. Make her worry.”

“Bogus charges?” Miller finally managed, his voice barely a whisper.

“Just enough to hold him. Just enough to send a message,” Julian seethed. “Make it happen, Miller. Soon.”

Julian ended the call, his jaw clenched, his eyes fixed on the Manhattan skyline. The audit was a nuisance, but he knew how to play dirty. And Leo, my gentle, vulnerable brother, was my greatest weakness.
