After Her Arrogant Husband Hires His Mistress to Publicly Humiliate Her at Their $450 Million Firm, Secret Board Advisor Claire Signs Their Direct Dismissal Order Only to Pay a Devastating Personal...
Harrison Croft’s office was a sanctuary of hushed efficiency, a stark contrast to the escalating chaos Julian was determined to unleash. Bookshelves lined with legal tomes, an imposing oak desk, and a panoramic view of Central Park filled the space. I placed Genevieve’s portfolio on the polished wood surface.
“This is Genevieve Adler’s sworn testimony,” I stated, pushing it across to him. “It details the movement of $450 million in stolen funds through offshore shell corporations, including one registered under Chloe Delacroix’s name.”
Croft picked up the portfolio, his movements precise and deliberate. He donned a pair of half-moon reading glasses and began to meticulously review each document. He flipped through the bank statements, cross-referenced the wire transfers, and scrutinized the notarized signatures. The only sound was the rustle of paper.
As he worked, my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Leo’s nurse, calling from the facility. I stepped away, lowering my voice.
“Is everything alright, Martha?” I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.
“Ms. Montgomery, the police were here,” Martha whispered, a tremor in her voice. “Two officers. They asked about Mr. Leo’s car, about a traffic violation from last week. Something about an improper lane change on Fifth Avenue.”
My jaw tightened. Bogus charges. Julian was already escalating. “What did you tell them?”
“I said he was with us, that he rarely drives himself,” Martha replied, clearly shaken. “They were very insistent, asking if he was driving a specific make and model. It was unsettling.”
“Thank you, Martha. Keep me updated immediately if they return,” I said, my voice strained. I hung up, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm. Julian wasn’t just targeting me; he was tightening the noose around Leo.
I returned to Croft’s desk. He finally removed his glasses, placing them carefully on the affidavit.
“Ms. Montgomery, this is… thorough,” he said, his voice grave. “More than thorough. The records are impeccable. The shell corporations, the specific transfers, the named beneficiaries. This affidavit is ironclad.”
A wave of cold relief washed over me. “What are the next steps?”
“Given the magnitude of the fraud and the direct evidence, we must call an emergency board meeting immediately,” Croft stated, his gaze firm. “We will present this testimony directly to the full board. There is no other course of action.”
“When can we schedule it?” I asked, my voice edged with urgency. Every moment Julian had was a moment he could cause more damage.
“I will arrange it for tomorrow morning,” Croft replied, already reaching for his phone. “Early. We need to move before Julian can maneuver further.” He looked at me, a flicker of concern in his usually impassive eyes. “Are you prepared for what comes next, Claire? This will be a war.”
“I am,” I said, meeting his gaze. My resolve had hardened into something cold and unyielding. Julian had pushed too far. He had involved Leo.
