Chapter 2: B: The Call of Isolation

#content-1

👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option B – Call Marcus’s phone directly to demand a calm explanation before touching anything.

I pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I scrolled to Marcus’s contact. Chloe watched me, her face pale in the dim light of the basement hallway.

“Are you sure?” she whispered.

I took a deep breath. “He has to explain this.”

I hit call. The phone rang once, twice. Just then, Marcus appeared at the bottom of the stairs, his face a mask of cold fury. His own phone vibrated in his hand, displaying my number.

His eyes narrowed. “You’re calling me? From my property? What gives you the right?”

I stammered, “Marcus, what is this place? The vault, the keypad…”

He cut me off, his voice rising in volume. “This is harassment. You’ve trespassed, attempted to break into a private area, and now you’re recording me.” He held up his phone, showing the active call.

“I’m not recording anything!” I protested, my voice weak.

“Aunt Evelyn, Uncle Ray,” Marcus boomed, speaking into the receiver as if they were already listening. “Maya is behaving erratically, accusing me of God knows what. I need you to confirm the legal protocols for unwarranted intrusion.”

A chilling certainty settled in my stomach. He was twisting it, weaponizing my attempt at communication.

My phone buzzed minutes later with a text from Aunt Evelyn: “Maya, we’ve received Marcus’s report. All trust disbursements are frozen until this is resolved. Do not contact us. We’re very disappointed.”

The silence in the basement felt heavy, suffocating. Marcus simply smiled, a thin, knowing curve of his lips.
