👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option C – Pack up and drive away into the mountain storm immediately.
The sound of Marcus’s footsteps descending the stairs was enough. The sheer panic seized me. I wasn’t ready for this confrontation.
“Chloe, we’re leaving,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “Now. Get everything.”
Chloe didn’t argue. We scrambled back up the stairs, leaving the ominous vault door behind us. The wind outside howled, rattling the cabin windows.
“We need to go,” I urged, grabbing my backpack from the living room floor.
Within minutes, we were stuffing our bags into the back of my SUV, the rain beginning to fall in sheets. The mountain road, already treacherous, would be even worse now. But staying felt impossible.
As I backed out of the driveway, headlights cut through the swirling mist. Marcus’s car. He was already here.
My phone buzzed an hour later, deep into the winding mountain roads. It was a message from Aunt Evelyn. “Marcus reports you abandoned the property and caused damage. We’re cutting off all contact until you explain this reckless behavior. Expect legal action regarding the rental.”
The screen blurred through my tears. Marcus had already spun his narrative, burying the secret of the basement vault with his lies.
