Chapter 12: Scenic Terrace / Open Ending

I looked at the thick stack of papers Eleanor had thrust across the polished mahogany table. The legal summons, the fabricated photos – it was all a carefully constructed trap. Julian shifted in his seat beside me, avoiding my gaze. His silence felt like another weight pressing down.

“These photographs,” I said, pushing the top sheet with a single finger, trying to keep my voice level. “They’re manipulated.”

Eleanor’s smile tightened, a thin, sharp line. “Darling, the law doesn’t care for your amateur opinions. The metadata is all there. Proof of your infidelity.”

“Is it?” I met her eyes. “Because my background is in bioacoustic sound analysis and digital forensics. I can spot a manipulated file from a mile away.”

A low squawk echoed from the corner of the dining room. Barnaby, the Albright family’s African Grey parrot, shifted on his ornate brass perch. He ruffled his gray feathers, his black eye darting between Eleanor and me. Usually, he was silent during dinner, a decorative fixture more than a pet.

“You’re a college student, Maya,” Eleanor dismissed, her hand waving dismissively. “Not a court-appointed expert. You signed a prenup. This evidence triggers the fault clause.”

“I’d like to see the forensic report then,” I insisted, my voice gaining strength. “The technical specifications. The EXIF data. Every single timestamp, every pixel alteration.”

Eleanor laughed, a dry, brittle sound that grated against the formal silence of the room. “You’re stalling. It won’t change anything. You either sign or face public humiliation and legal ruin.”

Barnaby let out another, louder squawk, a series of clicks and whistles that seemed out of place. He ruffled his crest feathers, tilting his head. It was a familiar pattern, one I recognized from my avian training coursework. A vocalization cue.

I glanced at Julian. He was pale, his hands clenched under the table. He’d helped his mother compile this file, even if he hadn’t created the fakes himself. His loyalty to Eleanor had always been absolute. Until now.

The tension in the room was a thick, suffocating blanket. The smell of roasted duck and expensive wine suddenly seemed grotesque. Barnaby let out a shrill whistle, a mimicry of a sound Eleanor often made to call him. He was trying to get attention. My attention.
