At a $14 million Westchester estate dinner, twenty-year-old audio behaviorist Maya faces fraudulent adultery papers from her mother-in-law until an unexpected pet bird and hidden text logs expose a...
Arthur stared at the phone, his fingers trembling as they clutched the device. His face was a mask of utter betrayal. He looked from the damning texts to Eleanor, who now stood rigid, her eyes wide with a desperate, trapped animal fear.
“Eleanor,” Arthur said, his voice flat, devoid of any emotion. “You tried to poison me.”
She stammered, “It’s a misunderstanding! A lie! That bird, Julian, they’re conspiring—”
“Conspiring to save my life?” Arthur finished, his voice rising now. He looked at Julian, then at me. His gaze settled on the teacup, still steaming faintly on the table.
“Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through the escalating tension. “Call 911. Now. Report a domestic poisoning attempt. Give them the address.”
Julian didn’t hesitate. His hand was already fumbling for his own phone. He typed furiously, his knuckles white. The false adultery charges, the fear of his mother – it all vanished in the face of this. His father’s life was on the line.
“No! You can’t!” Eleanor shrieked, making a frantic grab for the teacup. Her eyes were wild, desperate to destroy the evidence.
I was quicker. I intercepted her, blocking her path with my arm. “Don’t touch it, Eleanor! That’s evidence.”
“Let go of me, you little witch!” she snarled, clawing at my arm. Her carefully coiffed hair was coming undone, her designer dress rumpled. The elegant matriarch had vanished, replaced by a cornered predator.
“Westchester County Police,” Julian announced, his voice tight. “They’re dispatching officers to the Albright Estate. They want to know the nature of the emergency.”
“Attempted murder,” I stated clearly, loud enough for Julian to repeat into the phone. “Poison. Chemical poisoning. Secure the tea set, Julian. Don’t let anyone touch it.”
Arthur, still reeling, moved to stand protectively in front of the tea set. His eyes never left Eleanor, who now slumped back into her chair, defeated, but still seething.
Within minutes, the distant wail of sirens pierced the quiet evening. They grew louder, closer, signaling the end of Eleanor’s reign of terror within these walls. Red and blue lights began to flash through the estate’s grand windows, reflecting off the crystal and silver of the dinner table.
