The doctors’ lounge suddenly felt small, the air thick and cold around me. Eleanor’s face, usually composed, twisted with impatience. She pointed to the floor.

“Kneel, Maya. Now.”

Chloe let out another whimper, her hand pressed to her stomach. Julian looked from his mother to me, then back to Chloe, a bead of sweat tracing his temple. His tie, usually perfect, was slightly askew.

I felt a tremor start in my hands, but it wasn’t fear. It was a cold, sharp resolve.

I pulled my encrypted satellite phone from my scrub pocket. It was heavy, reassuring. The three trustee uncles, lined up by the door like stone gargoyles, exchanged glances.

“What are you doing?” Julian asked, his voice low, a warning.

I ignored him, my thumb flying across the screen. My father’s direct line. It rang twice.

His voice, calm and deep, filled the silent room from the speakerphone. “Arthur Lin-Danforth.”

Eleanor’s jaw clenched. She knew that voice. Everyone in high finance knew that voice.

“Father,” I said, my own voice surprisingly steady. “It’s Maya.”

A beat of silence. Then, “Maya? Is everything alright?” A subtle shift in his tone, a steel beneath the calm.

“I need you to confirm something for Dr. Eleanor Albright and the St. Jude Board of Trustees.” My gaze swept over their stunned faces. “Please confirm the status of the Albright family’s municipal bond loan.”

Eleanor took a step forward, her face a mask of disbelief. “What is this nonsense, Maya? Hang up the phone.”

But it was too late. My father’s voice, amplified by the speakerphone, cut through the room like a scalpel.

“Yes, Dr. Albright. As of this moment, based on a breach of moral turpitude and ethical conduct clauses pertaining to your family’s governance, the Federal Reserve Bank has initiated an emergency call on the Albright family’s $50 million municipal hospital bond loan.”

The air left the room. It was audible, the collective gasp. Julian’s mouth fell open. Chloe stopped weeping.

“Effective immediately,” my father continued, his voice resonating with an unshakeable authority. “Our legal team is already filing the necessary paperwork. Expect formal notification within the hour.”

The sound of my father’s voice hung in the air, a death knell for their carefully constructed dynasty. Eleanor looked like she’d been struck. Her face drained of color, leaving a network of fine, angry lines around her eyes.

“No,” she whispered, a desperate, hollow sound. “You can’t do this.”

“The terms of the loan were clear, Eleanor,” I said, my voice cutting. “Moral turpitude. Ethical conduct. Public display of abuse and coercion.”

I kept my eyes on Eleanor. The power had shifted. The silence now was hers, a heavy weight pressing down. The board members shifted uncomfortably, their gazes darting between Eleanor and me. Julian just stared, his face a canvas of utter defeat.

“This changes everything,” one of the uncles muttered, his voice barely a whisper.

My father’s calm voice returned to the speaker. “Maya, I trust you have everything under control?”

“Yes, Father,” I said, finally letting a small, tight smile touch my lips. “Perfectly under control.”
