Eleanor lunged, her hand reaching for my phone, but I was quicker. I pulled it back, ending the call. The silence that followed was even more deafening than my father’s announcement.

Her chest heaved, a raw, furious sound. “You… you can’t undo this!”

“No,” I said, my voice gaining strength. “But you certainly enabled it.”

Julian, finally shaking himself from his stupor, stepped towards his mother. “Mother, what did she mean? Fifty million?”

Eleanor ignored him, her eyes fixed on me, blazing. “This is blackmail, Maya. You’ll regret this.”

“Perhaps,” I said, meeting her glare. “But not as much as you’ll regret what comes next.”

I turned my attention to the stunned board members. Their faces were a mixture of fear and dawning comprehension. The family’s financial cornerstone was crumbling around them.

“Before Dr. Albright can begin her damage control,” I announced, my voice clear and firm, “I am formally demanding an immediate, comprehensive audit of all surgical ICU patient charts from my rotations over the past six months, specifically focusing on Dr. Chloe Brooks’s involvement.”

Chloe flinched, pulling back. A flicker of something crossed her face—not fear, but a quick, calculating dread. She had been crying just moments ago. Now her eyes were dry.

Eleanor let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. “An audit? What ridiculous pretense is this?”

“The Federal Reserve doesn’t call in $50 million loans over ‘pretense,’ Eleanor,” I countered, letting the implication hang in the air. “There are consequences.”

The three uncles, usually Eleanor’s unwavering loyalists, were now whispering amongst themselves, their gazes flickering nervously towards Eleanor. This wasn’t just family drama anymore. This was a financial earthquake.

“I won’t allow it,” Eleanor declared, her voice still holding a trace of her usual imperiousness, but it was cracking around the edges.

“You don’t have a choice,” I stated, the finality in my tone echoing the authority I’d just heard from my father. “Your loan default means federal oversight. That means federal auditors.”

I didn’t wait for a response. I walked past the frozen uncles, unlatching the heavy oak door myself. The hallway outside was bustling, oblivious to the financial apocalypse that had just detonated in the lounge. The mundane sounds of hospital life—a gurney rattling, a PA announcement, laughter from nurses—felt impossibly distant.

I needed to clear my head, to plan. The hospital diner, with its fluorescent lights and aroma of burnt coffee, seemed like a safe, neutral territory. I ordered a black coffee, the bitter taste a welcome shock.

I found a quiet booth in the corner, pulling out my phone to search for federal medical oversight regulations. The weight of what I’d just done settled over me. It felt like walking a tightrope over a canyon.

A man slid into the opposite side of my booth. He was older, with kind eyes and a neatly trimmed beard. He held a half-eaten sandwich and a generic plastic ID badge.

“Rough shift?” he asked, his voice soft, a hint of an Irish accent.

I just nodded, pushing my coffee cup around. “You could say that.”

He took another bite of his sandwich. “I overheard a rather… spirited conversation in the doctors’ lounge a few minutes ago. Something about a $50 million loan and a Fed Chairman?”

My head snapped up. How much had he heard? My grip tightened on my phone.

He saw my alarm and offered a reassuring smile. He flipped his badge around. The ID was crisp, official. Dr. Sean O’Connor. Below his name, in bold letters: Senior Federal Health Investigator.

“I’m here for a routine audit, actually,” he explained, gesturing vaguely towards the hospital. “And that little piece of theatre just made my ‘routine’ rather interesting.” He paused, looking at me intently. “Mind telling me what’s really going on, Dr. Lin-Danforth?”
